Orvet;
Not on the subject, but you rang my bell when you said early Benchmade Auto. Take a look at this one and if possible tell me all there is to know.
Its 9" (OA) with a 4" blade.

Dale
Chasing patterns... Imperial Outer's
Mrs. Gump: I happen to believe you make your own collection. You have to do the best with what Schrade gave you.

Forrest Gump: What's in my collection, Mama?

Mrs. Gump: You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself. Knives are like a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get.

As in the above paraphrase, you never know where Schrade knife research will lead. I decided to look closer at the Imperial hunting knife pattern. They were made as Imperials and as Hammer Brands, and they came from a slightly simpler pattern, what I found to be called the Outer’s pattern . This one I followed from the script stamped Imperials back to Marbles Safety Ax Company in 1930. And the surprise, another knife pattern it replaced that they made in 1902-1930.

The Marble's Safety Axe Company released the original Dall DeWeese hunting knife in 1902 and it went out of production in about 1930. DeWeese was a big-game hunter from Canon City, Colorado, famous at the time. His intent with this design was to create "the lightest, most compact utility knife which could be made."

The DeWeese knife featured a high-carbon cutlery steel blade 4 1/4 long and the overall length was just 7 3/4" (very typical sizing for fixed blades of the time). It had a "dull saw back" for placing the thumb on the spine while working.

Dall DeWeese was an adventurer, horticulturist, entrepreneur, and amateur paleontologist who hunted with Teddy Roosevelt on several occasions. His trips to Alaska inspired him to write to Roosevelt and led to the establishment of game laws there as well as the Kanai penninsula reserve.

When the Marble's DeWeese hunter was discontinued in 1930 this knife, the Outer's, replaced it in their line-up. These sold for about a dollar during the Great Depression and were styled after kitchen knives but with stout, full-tang construction. Marble's did not make these after World War II. They were 7 1/2" long and overall with a 4 1/4" upswept (trailing point) blade. The steel was high-carbon. The Outer’s pattern knife used, instead of a cast or flat metal guard, a swelled bolster, again very popular today on custom and some production fixed blade knives.

Although Marbles quit making the Outer’s pattern (except for a 500 pc. Limited edition in 2003), quite a few other cutlerys picked it up, some keeping the basic blade, bolster, and flat slab jigged bone handles, and some opting to modify the pattern with an oval aluminum, steel, nickle silver or brass guard.

Outer's pattern knives from Western, Colonial, Imperial, Queen City and quite a few other makers will be seen, and some as yet unconfirmed knives with the Imperial stamp in script.

This is the research rant Dale was refering to as posted in May of this year. As with all of my research, there are a wide variety of resources used, and in the never ending battle for truth, justice, and the Am....well, a researcher's work is never done. Just recently a new bit of info came up. In re-reading BR Levine's older guide (ISBN:0-910676-94-1), I came across this:

"One of today's leading American producers of hunting knives is Western Cutlery Company of Colorado. Western, then called Western States, made it's first hunting knife in 1928.

The first pattern that Western States made was the number 63, an inexpensive scale-tang self-guard little knife. This design was copied a few years later by Marble's as the "Outer's".

So.... Remington, Western, Jean Case, Queen City, Colonial, Utica, Imperial, and all the others did not, in fact copy Webster Marble's creation. They all copied Platt's!

Here's something different from Imperial... not flashy, just a solid, inexpensive fixed-blade knife.

Hey ;
This should qualify.Man I love it when a plan comes together. Wife and I took a ride 60 miles up into Washington and I hit a jackpot. There should be at least three of you who like these new old stock. The honesteel box was incorrect, its for a 156ot, the 165ot is in box with no docs. Thats okay with me. Does anybody remember the 95 price.

WB,
NICE SCORE!!! ::tu:: ::tu:: :mrgreen:

The latest price I have for them is $44.95 in 1989. It does not appear in the later price lists or catalogs I have. I have all the price lists from 1987 through 2004, excepting 1994, 1995, 2000 & 2001. I think 1989 is the last year they appear in Schrade's catalogs or price lists.

Codger will know, but I am pretty sure 1989 was the last year, except possibly for special issues like Ducks Unlimited or the Schrade Anniversary.

Congrats on the great find. These are getting harder to find in a store.

A nice double score indeed! I can't see the gold logo printed on the box to give you a date on that, but 1991 was the last year the 165OT was cataloged, and it listed retail at $51.95.

The Honesteel was cataloged from 1972 thru 2000, but the first ones had two round holes, one for attaching the thong, and one for the sheath/handle stud. The ones with the teardrop holes appeared circa 1980. The thong and stud fit through the same hole. Later, after circa 1999, there was a single round hole and the thong was deleted.

USMC Knife?

Post by RRRRanch »

That sure looks like a USAF Pilots survival knife to me. If it has a 5 1/2 inch blade that is what it is. I carried, used, sharped and modified several of each over a period of 17 years before I retired from active duty and still have several.

Codger is absolutely right on the last year & price of the 165OT. I went through a bunch of catalogs in a short period of time and put it into a spread sheet.

O YES that is an cool knife too ::drool:: ::drool::I have an old digital camera as by todays standards it is a Sony Dual Media ::tu:: Which you can use a floppy or a Memory Stick, my focus is set for close ups and I use a blend of natural light comeing thru the window and the light in my room, I am still learning myself but those settings on the camera seem to work best for me ::tu:: Here is another hunter ::tu::
P.S. I find that no flash on a sunny day works best when inside, but like I said still learning ::tu:: Some people say with a background like I use sometimes takes away from the knife because your attention is not totally on the knife so I have tried a dark background on this picture :?
Mossdancer ; thanks for your tip. I see what you mean now. I will try again when my son brings his camer back.

Hey Rick;
The double barrel is a 1924 Galef. The knife is I think a kit knife. Someone put it together without a proper finish. Takes a lot of elbow grease even with black cake and a buffer to get striations out. I know why custom knives cost so much after putting in about five hours on this and not making much headway. Any way it is ready to go hunting.
The pistol is legal with rifling it is 44XL cal.
