A lot of them are pre-1900.The Rodgers bowie is what got me started back into knife collecting about 10 years ago.The stag is perfect and the blade is full and the sheath doesn't look as though it has ever been on a belt.A VcrownR mark probably around 1880.
The last little knife is a Wm.Congreave and dates around 1840.Birds-eye rivets;integral liners/bolsters;match striker nail mark,and a small piece of bone to act as a blade stop when closing.I have never seen stag tnat small and so well proportioned.

Thank you for the kind words.The story behind how I got it is rather unusual:

I had driven my vintage Pontiac wagon to a car show in Marshall Michigan on a Sunday morning only to discover that a rainstorm had closed the show down early.A little disappointed at driving 75 miles for nothing,I stopped at a coffee shop downtown to refill my cup for the drive home.

Next door to the coffee shop was a small antique store that had some interesting(but non-knife)pieces in the window so after getting my coffee I strolled in. I almost turned around and walked out as what I first saw was mostly what I call,"new-tiques" or newly fabricated stuff made to look old.

Near the back of the shop was a display case and checkout counter that had a small display of pocket knives on the top.I asked the clerk to see a couple of the knives in the case and as I was looking at them he asked if I collected knives.I replied that I did and he mentioned that he had a box of knives that he hadn't finished pricing and would I like to see them.

He brought them out and I looked through the box;seeing some interesting pieces but way over priced.As I was looking he asked if I would be interested in a Bowie knife.I said sure;thinking it was probably some hunting knife or cheap import.He reached into the displayed and pulled out(from underneath a bunch of other stuff)the Rodgers bowie.

Without even seeing the knife out of the sheath,I knew it was something good.I examined it and he ventured that it might have been made around 1900.I told him I thought it was earlier than that;probably 1880's.I looked at the price on it and it was $225.00.

I had about $300 on me(fortunately)and asked him if he would forgo the sales tax on it(6% in Michigan)as I needed to get gas for the drive home.He said yes and money quickly changed hands.

On the way home I called a friend of mine(who is a member of the Antique bowie Knife Collector's Association)to have him take a look at it.He opined that I could probably turn it around to a Rodgers collector for $1200-$1500 dollars! Nice but I wasn't interested in selling it;it was the nicest one I had seen in a long time.The 9" spear point blade is in really good shape and full.The guard is a little loose(typical on early knives)and the stag is perfect.The sheath is missing the metal tip but otherwise excellent.One of the center pieces of my collection.The other is a 17th century Persian jambiya that I have posted pictures of before.

It is all a matter of being in the right place at the right time.I have had several good scores at yard sales and flea markets and I've missed a couple as well.One time less than a mile from home.I was headed to a job and spotted a yard sale just as I was next to the street it was on.Was going to back up but decided instead to drive around the block.BIG mistake!Just as I am pulling up this guy who got there moments before is picking up a Case Tested Knife Axe complete from a basket of junk.Gave the guy $20 for the whole basket!!!!
I am currently(actually have been for the past couple years on and off)writing a book about my knife scores.Hopefully I'll finish it before I depart this earth.lol
One of my greatest non-knife scores was the item pictured.almost didn't stop at the yard sale it was at TWICE!Wife made me drive back and I found this in an old Timex box.Vintage 1967 Breitling 806 Navitimer mounted on an old leather biker style leather band.Never been serviced and keeps great time for a manual wind watch.Last one I saw on e-Bay was not in as good a shape and sold for nearly $2,300 dollars.My cost:FIVE DOLLARS!
They are out there;you just have to look and know what you're looking for.

I am a big advocate of just leaving stag alone; but I just got these exclusive Red Stag (dyed) trappers (1 and 2 blade) in from Canal Street and really like them. It is like a combination between the old Case Smooth Rose bone and Stag.

I to like the red in them. I would like to find some red stag like this.

If any one knows where some is Please let me know.

This is the only custom knife I own and it was the stag grips that caused me to buy it at a gunshow about 16 years ago.

Thanks Mike, I've been working on my camera techinques (since I came here I learned just how poor my picture taking was!) Just took a picture of my only other stag handled knife - a pocketknife, this Case Eisenhower I bought at Cahoon's TruValue Hardware store way down-east in Pamlico County about 11 years ago. Nice "Sunday" knife.
