I just got this in the mail today, I am pleased with it, though it appears it may have been taken apart. Still everything seems to fit together very well. Was not familiar with this brand name, though it is listed in all of my references, but no background info on the Company really.
I have been developing an addiction to these easy open swell end/tear drop patterns. Love the look and feel of them!
On the other side I noticed 2 circles around the pins... Peen marks maybe? For resetting the pins? I circled them in read. For some reason, scanning for me has not panned out yet, need to mess with the settings more, the blades always look like crap, but the handles turn out pretty good.

cool knife. butler bros.1877-1940, chicago. wholesalers, manufactured in u.s.a. using that brand name. this is from brl 3rd. goins says 1888-1907 also in new york. their trademark was "warranted never dull". old knives often have pins showing. is there any blade wobble?

Could those marks be a patch or repair (epoxy/superglue fill?)...like these covers were taken from another knife and the holes didn't line up perfectly for this knife?
If not, I don't know, but your theory has merit.
Just to add a slightly random thought...it's pretty easy to "pop" the pivot pin on a slipjoint by twisting/prying (think paint can), but for me, a bolster pin showing where there are no blades, seems more of a concern regarding reassembly. I'm not claiming this knife was apart, but maybe so.

The epoxy theory would be one I will look further into when I get home, but I think the scales are the same, and the other side did not have those circle marks. When I noticed them it reminded me of when I set in nails with a nail puch, sometimes I missed and left the same looking little circle in the wood.
As far as it being apart, a few things, the bolster pins can be easily seen, and the shield pin, and the liner on side is slightly bent in away from the scale. The blades and springs all line up perfectly, and they have great snap. Judging by the wear on the bolsters, shield and blades, I have no reason to doubt it is all the same knife, but you can tell everything had some heavy duty buffing on them to shine them up.
Oh the liners were not brass as well, so I am assuming they are nickle, as well as the pins. The pins do look like they may have been reset in though, is why I am sure the knife was taken apart, I am still happy with it though!
