PAL Cutlery stag letter opener knife

Post by knife7knut »

Won this on e-Bay a week ago and finally got it this evening.I have quite a few letter opener knives and many PAL ones but this is the first stag handled one I have seen.It is in near mint condition and was reasonable in price. If it had been marked Remington it would probably have sold for 5 or 6 times what I paid for it(under $30).
The tip is blunted somewhat and I thought it may have been broken but on closer inspection it appears to have been made like that(unless it was a very clean break;no evidence of bending).
Anyway it makes a great addition to my growing collection of letter opener knives.

I have quite a few letter openers that are made of stag and a bunch of PAL and Remington letter opener knives but this is the first one I have seen in stag.PAL bought out Remington in 1940 or 41 and for awhile there were some knives with Remington tang stamps and PAL etches(called transition knives)so it I had to guess I would say late 40's or early 50's.
The stag is definitely well matched and not very thick like a lot of later stag knives.A definite asset to my collection,
