Case XX in Knife World

I can't believe no one has started a thread thanking Gary for his excellent article about the history of the Case XX trademark in the latest edition of Knife World. I've looked all over, ( lots of places to look on AAPK now ) and can't find it, so I'm putting my congratulations here.

Great job Gary !

It takes a lot of time and work to put together a story like this so that even a Case dummy like me can learn more about our hobby. It also takes the effort of folks like Gary to make Knife World the premier publication of it's kind.

Well Fran, I'm speechless, and thank you for the kind words. You are right though, sometimes an article can take several months to put together, looking for rare examples to photograph, waiting to see other collectors at knife shows to borrow material or knives and then waiting to see them again to return it. (Some of this stuff is irreplaceable, so you're afraid to drop it in the mail). It's a labor of love though, and I really have enjoyed it over the years, and great collectors/readers/family like Fran and all the other fine members of the forums are the main reason why

I put all of Garys articles on the top of my knife world stack for later when I need to do
research on a old Case. I can't keep it all in my head anymore age has caught up to me.

I was impressed with the manner in which you were able to wend your way through the convoluted knife making history of the Case family and especially that XX trade mark, without totally loosing a knife novice like myself. Excellent article. Where in the world did you find a copy of transfer papers for the trademark 'XX' from Case Bros. to W.R.Case?

Thanks guys I sincerely appreciate all your great comments. Charlie I remember your great article "The Humble Harness Knife" It was great. I've often wondered when you were going to write another one. I found The trademark transfer documents (and alot of other interesting stuff) when I recently gained access to the files of the late John Goins, author of "Goins' encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings". On several occassions in past years I approaced the former Case historian Shirley Boser asking to see these documents or something confirming the dates. She said Gary due to changes in ownership those papers are no longer in the Case archives, and I've never seen them either. Not too long ago I offered to return a copy of those papers to the archives and the new historian said she had several docments matching this in the archives...so go figure. By the way records have burned and and the Govt departments which handled trademarks have changed several times since 1914, so the trademark and patent office was of no help in locating these papers.
