My best military hardware

Post by 268bull »

My Dad passed this one on to me. I bring it out every once in awhile to admire and daydream. Thought I would share with the forum. He took a German Air Force officer as a POW. The officer wanted to surrender to an American officer (an equal). Dad was a Corporal and told him it didn't work like that, and relieved him then and there of his personal belongings hauled him back to his outfit Hdqtrs.

Very interesting things, and having a family story makes them even better. ::tu::

Thanks for the comments folks! My Dads outfit was sweeping thru the Rhur valley in '44. He told me there was 2 German armies, one of the Nazi party, and the army of conscripts. He said the regular German army realized their effort was over and desertion and surrender was common among them. He told me that a lot were young boys or old men that were under equiped and underfed. I'm pround to own the few things he captured from them. The Luftwaffen dagger is the most prized. ::tu:: Bull

Hi Bull:
Great Story and collection. In case you have not done it yet, put into writing everything you know regarding your Pop's time in military. If you were in write up your time and life also. If you no or have heard stories of your Grand or Great Grand Father or even further back do that to. Keep it in safe place with your will and other papers. Keep a copy with the knife or knives also. Your Great Great Grand children will think very highly of you. There is far to much of History lost not due to being remiss but just forgetting to do it. Any other eyes that see this please do the same. You all would be surprised at the knowledge you have that the future will be missing unless you tell them. I really enjoyed the Corporal versus Officer angle.
