Here is a Ducks Unlimited 15OT that I made from a blank out of the Schrade factory.

I had to cut the resolution way down so it would upload. I am afraid the quality of the scan suffered greatly.

Here are a few examples of the Outers pattern. The pattern was first made by Marbles and eventually copies by most major knife makers. Codger did some research on the Outers Pattern, perhaps he would be so good as to share it with us?

From right to left the knives are:
WEST-CUT/BOLDER COLO./MADE IN USA
IMPERIAL/PROV.R.I. U.S.A.
Utica- blade etch: Kutmaster/TEMPERED CARBON STEEL
HAMMER BRAND USA
IMPERIAL/PROV. R.I. U.S.A.
This last one with the stag on the handle is basically the same knife as the others, but with a plastic handle that encloses the tang.

Those fixed blades all of em are tremendous. I'll get around to mine when I finish the folders.

Just like with the last group, they are really nice.
Somehow knives and guns just go together at times, they surely compliment each other for a nice photo.
Mr. Just Told, I am not very adept at photos myself but you might try a lighter background. It seems to make for a better contrast with the subject.

Hi Rick;
I dont do much with folding gerbers. Dont have that one. From the looks on finger notches in handles it looks early, maybe 50's. The notches are similiar to what Case and Cutco were using on their kitchen knives then and in 60's. I will show pic around and see what emanates.

I believe your Gerber is one designed by Al Mar before he went out and opened his own company in 1979 (as I recall).
Al later refined the design of that knife and produced a folding hunter of his own. I don't have one of the Al Mar folding hunters, (I wish!),but I do have 2 models of the Al Mar Air Weight based on the same blade design. The Air Weight was the first Al Mar with ATS-34 steel, and one of the first production knives on the market with ATS-34, at least according to Al.
I will have to dig out my Air Weight and scan it. In the mean time I will post a picture of the later Air weight Elite.

I got my Al Mar's when I managed a cutlery store in the 1980s & early 1990s. Al was a great guy and friend.

As you probably Al Mar & Pete Kershaw both worked for Pete Gerber before starting their own companies. Interestingly enough, Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) was started by former employees of Gerber, Kershaw & Benchmade.

Orvet, now that you mention it that handle is similiar that used on the switchblade designed by Al Mar and produced in connection with ? maybe
Paragon was the name. Wow time is cruel to the memory.

I left the cutlery business in August 1992, just shortly before Al Mar died. As I recall he died in September or October. The knife you show must have been made after his death. I do not recall it prior to his death. The only switchblade I ever saw Al's name on (when he was alive) was made by Benchmade. Al told me Les (Les de Asis, owner of Benchmade) was the only person who had ever made a knife in the USA with his (Al's) name on it. Benchmade had just come out with their early automatics and were taking the market by storm.

I also did business with Benchmade and Les had shown me the the CAD drawings of the knife before the ever went into production. The Al Mar version was basically the same knife as Benchmade's with Al's chop on it.
That was not long before I got out of the business and I had some health issues and really didn't start collecting knives again until a year or two ago. I really didn't follow the knife industry until I started collecting again.

The knife you are showing is not an Al Mar that I have seen before. After Al died his wife & daughter ran the business for a while. I went in to his office about a year after his death and talked to his wife briefly. At the Blade Show West last year I found out that the company had sold several years ago. I understand the guy who bought it was an old Special Forces buddy of Al. He told me he does not use the same maker in Japan that Al used. I think the makers name was Huhey. Spelling is probably wrong, but it is pronounced like Hugh-Hay.

I have not kept up with what the company has produced since 1992. With Al gone, it just isn't the same for me. The knife you show is a nice looking knife, I just haven't seen it before.
