Schrade Knife Co.
Is it correct that the Schrade knife co. went out of business? How many other knife companies were affected because of being contracted out? I see these new in the box sometimes at sales and am not quite sure which ones will be collectable. Thanks for the help.

Loaded questions my friend! ....I won't touch the first two because I was never one that really collected Schrade knives, others here on this site will have those answers! ....On your last question I have been told insight on what to look for in Schrade knives made before the doors closed below,
1.) Look for knives with the U.S.A. Tang Stamping only!
2.) Look for knives with natural handles like Bone, Horn, Stag & Pearl + some that have a finer grade of wood!
3.) Look for knives that have all of their original packaging & paper work, this includes all cardboard box's, Tins & wood displays!

Welcome to the forum. I can help a bit, 1st- American Schrade as we knew it closed their doors in 2004. Their name & intellectual property were purchased by Taylor cutlery who are having knives produced under the Schrade name, but all are currently made in China. This includes familiar Old Timer & Uncle Henry patterns. To make sure you are getting a real American Schrade look for the following:
1. Roger is right: look for USA on the knife- if it was American made it will have this stamped on the blade
2. Don't be foooled by the box- some of the newer knives have an American flag on the package even though they were made in China
3. If the knife is being sold as a Tayor made knife it is the newer production stuff
4. In my opinion all of the USA made Schrade line is/will be collectible, but buy what you like best.

To add to what Nick said, there are a few knives with the Schrade name that are still being made in the USA for Taylor. The ones I have seen have the Schrade Walden name on them and are/were made by Camillus. The one I have is a good quality knife.
Smokey Mt. has some knives with the Walden name on them, that were not made by Schrade. I think Camillus made them also, though I am not sure if Taylor was involved in that deal or not.
I have also heard that Bear made some knives for Taylor with the Schrade name on them. You might ask Codger_64, he knows more about them than I do.
Mostly what to look for is the Schrade name & made in USA.
