That's the standard, full sized Robeson scout/utility, 3 5/8" closed length.
That's a pretty knife. Great handles. Essentially full blades. Nice.

Very nice Robeson's...I think their scout-utility knives are some of the best ever made IMO...
Charlie the Sword Brand has bone handle's and they look like peach seed jigging. Well I'll
throw mine in the pot, it's a 649214...I really like the shield on these Robeson's...

I have to admit that my Robeson scout is one of my favorites, that is now that I've gotten used to the screwdriver that looks like a snapped off blade.
I still haven't figured out if the short blade extension above the bottle opener is a can opener or for some other purpose?

That is a NOICE one Welder Bob!
I too wonder about that opener blade. Can't wrap my brain around how it is used.

That "mystery" blade is surely a combination Can opener, Bottle opener, IMO.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Maybe this will help...the bottom part is a cap lifter and the top is a can opener, this is
the way I learned to use one. You punch through the lid and let the stud ride on the rim
of the can and work your way around it. The picture show's the blade on the outside, it would of course be on the inside...I just wasn't going to punch a hole with this blade. There may
be other ways...I do know if your hungry enough you'll figure it out...

Bob,
Nice knife!
I haven`t seen any of these G. Schrade Boy & Girl scout Wire Jack chow kits posted yet.
Here is one of each in it`s original leather carry case.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Bob is correct. Perforate the lid with the sharp edge of the blade pointed away from you, rest the stud on the edge of the can for leverage, then work your way around the lid, cutting up from underneath.
There is a modification of that cap-lifter/tin-opener blade on which the end is screw-driver. It still has a cutting edge on the under side for opening tins as described above.
I showed this knife much earlier in this thread, but here it is again to illustrate the different cap-lifter that Robeson used.

Here's my Cattaraugus Junior Scout knife with two blades and brown bone scales, circa 1920s. Tang stamp on main blade reads CATTARAUGUS CUTLERY LITTLE VALLEY N.Y. On back it reads 22899 UR. Stamp on back of can opener reads PATENT APPLIED FOR.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Taxes are done, now it is time for a short period of mental health.
Here are a couple of unofficial Scout/Utility knives, I do not remember seeing any here. They are both "unused" so far. That red is starting to shrink a little and the sides of the Lakota are identical & embossed. They both got odd punches I have not seen here yet, so I have killed two birds.
I watched a show about Red Cloud over the week-end and it reminded me of the Lakota. I believe we are having tacos tonight and that reminded me of that ole time can opener on the Schrade.
It is also stamped "Beverage Can-Opener".
Too bad it is out-dated.

THAT is what us OLD FARTS used to open our adult canned beverages and kid canned beverages before some enterprising smart aleck invented the pull tab and bane of all who use metal detectors.
THey were also known as "church keys" by some. They made a triangular hole in the top of the can to drink from. You'd punch one hole that size and then turn the can 180° and poke a smaller hole for it to vent. Now if you were a REALLY heavy drinker. You'd punch one hole to drink from, put the can to your mouth, tilt your head back thereby raising the can to vertical and then punch another hole in the other end of the can. Made the beer really easy to get out of the can and down your gullet.
We referred to that ignorant move as "shotgunning" a beer.

Here is the close-up of the can opener. One of my guides calls it a "Beer" can-opener.
I am not postive, but I do think the sodas were still it bottles when these knives were made.

Re: The All Scout Knives Thread
Now I feel OLD.
I knew the slide rule and the typewriter had pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur, but I did not realize that the humble but ubiquitous Church Key had met the same fate.
There was a time when every frat boy had one on his key chain. Not only were they used to open cans of beer but also soda, evaporated milk, canned fruit juices, etc.
They were everywhere you went; a humble, but useful tool, present in every kitchen, toolbox and tackle box.
This one resides in my kitchen on the side of my refrigerator attached by the magnet on the back, (see pic below). This is typical of the construction of most church keys, can opener on one end & bottle opener on the other.
The pull-tab concept for beer & soda cans was not introduced in the US until 1964. It took a while for all beer and soda producers to switch over to the pull tab can.
By 1967 when Jim Ed Brown had a Country Music hit with "Pop A Top Again," we had all pretty much forgotten about the old steel cans for soda & beer. That is until 1972 when I got to a little base in the jungle of SE Asia called Nam Phong. There we had rusty steel cans of Schlitz, and a couple other brands that all required a Church Key!
Nothing like drinking 7 or 8 year old beer……warm, and loving it!
BTW, the Beer Dump, about 1/2 acre in size, was the most secure, most heavily guarded area on the base!
It amazes me that such a common, ever present tool as the Church Key has passed unnoticed from our common awareness.
I guess the Church Key blade on a knife is the new Presto Lite blade. Still showing up in older knives causing questions to be asked by each new generation of knife collectors.
I feel so old I think I need a nap.
Dale

Nope. Soda pop came in cans just like beer did.9ball wrote:Here is the close-up of the can opener. One of my guides calls it a "Beer" can-opener.

Somone has to bring this thread back on track
This is a Hammer Brand scout pattern, though not an official scout knife as far as I know. Unusually, it has double nail nicks on the master blade. Nice bones scales.
