Depth of Mercy! Can There be, Mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God His wrath forbear? Me the chief of sinners, spare?
I have long withstood His grace,
Long provoked Him to His face;
Would not hearken to His calls;

There for me the Saviour stands;

I know praise songs seem to be the thing, but if you read and reflect on the words of many of these old hymns there is nothing like them. This describes me (and every person who believes) so well, unworthy of the love bestowed and forgiveness given, knowingly doing wrong and asking for reprieve, saved by sacrifice, washed clean by blood.

I agree. I WAS the Lay Leader in a United Methodist Church, until our District Superintendent virtually forced us to close. I now attend a Baptist Church but will not join because I will not get involved in church politics again.
The traditional hymns just seem to be more in line with worshipping than most of the praise and worship songs. Every once in a while, the praise and worship songwriters get it right. This one comes to mind, probably because I played it in my old church.

Even as a child, I liked the Wesley hymns. Our little country church close to the farm in Cumberland was United Methodist, then they bought their freedom (literally) to become Global Methodist. I refer to it as the Church in the Wildwood.

I'm happy you have those good memories.
I also attended a small Methodist church that was located way out in the woods, many years ago. I think my favorite part of the service was the hymn singing.
