Something I never understood was the different grinds on knives. I know there are no stupid questions, so I thought I would just ask my knife brethren. How can you tell hollow grinds, flat grinds, etc. I have this 47 in my pile. Is it hollow grind? It's just something I never learned. Thank you guys for any info for this rookie.

Those look like flat ground blades but it’s hard to know for sure without having the knife in hand. They could be hollow ground but not detectable in the picture.

Hard to say from the picture provided, without the knife in hand. Here is good descriptive take on some common basic grinds.

Thanks guys. This will give me some study time. Appreciate you. Here is a pic of the 47's blade. Dont know if it will help indicating the grind or not. I have a lot to learn.

Here are a couple of examples that may illuminate the difference between a flat and a hollow grind. When I lay a straight edge on the blade the difference is clear.

Flat grind on a Schrade 804 Whittler

Hollow grind on a Case 6380 Whittler

Case does use a hollow grind on some current production, the 3220 Peanut being one. Other current production Case knifes that I own are flat ground. Your 47 looks as if it might be hollow ground.

Awesome explanation Mel! This 47 looks to be hollow grind according to my ruler test. I couldn't hold it and take a picture too but it definitely looks to be hollow grind. Thank you sir!!
