Elephant Ivory Handles

I just picked up my first Ivory handled knife, according to Voyles.

Very cool knife, RR. Is that a fleam blade I see? I am assuming that knife is for veterinary use.

Happy this thread got bubbled back up top, there are some beautiful knives in here. Can any of them actually be legally sold any longer? curious.

If the ivory is over 100 years old and you can prove the provenance then it is probably legal. The laws are kind of complex (to me) but the central point of all of them is keep folks from selling ivory.

Mel, yes, that's a fleam, and it's a first for me as well. Having grown up on a farm, I don't think I would like blood-letting animals. But it couldn't be worse than de-horning cattle.

We always kept a can of pine tar and a putty knife at the ready. Cut the horn and seal the ends before you got sprayed with blood.

I rehandled this GOLDEN RULE about 35 years ago after the celluloid picture scales blew up. A friend who does fancy pearl and ivory inlay work on musical instruments gave me some wonderfully clear and pure white elephant ivory. He gave me 4 or 5 pieces and I stashed the rest. Needless to say, I have torn into my storage a bunch of times and can't find it for my soul!! (The knife is worth saving; both blades are hollow ground. Haven't see that too often.) Maybe the poor elephant has put a curse on me. Only fitting, I guess. J.O'.
