Re: Patina
See how it goes naturally. If the patina isn't coming as fast as you'd like, then force it.
Take care and God bless,

Id say cut some acidic foods first, then try vinegar or mustard.

Re: Patina
I think whether or not to force the desired patina depends on how you plan to use the knife.
Consider that if you use the knife only to cut dry goods, it will take a very long time to patina but if you use it on moist items like food for example, it won’t take long at all to patina naturally.
Personally, I almost exclusively use my pocketknives to cut dry goods. In my case, if I wanted a patina I would definitely force it.

I have found that slicing tomatoes for salads does a great job at starting a good brown patina.

That's my Etsy store where I sell old knives and sometimes handmade knife accessories to support my knife habbit. Thanks for looking my friend.

Thanks for all the idea's on forcing a patina. I believe I will just let it naturally develop the patina thru use, cutting up my dinner occasionally, and such.

Re: Patina
I got the bright idea to force patina on a little GEC lockback knife a few years ago. I filled a tall glass with white vinegar and put the knife in to soak overnight. BIG MISTAKE! The next morning, the blade was black and the red jigged bone handles had turned a funky orange color. With a lot of wiping and use I managed to get the blade lightened up to a suitable level, but the handles were, and still are, that funky orange-ish color. Lesson learned.

Re: Patina
You can always let it go natural, and if after a few months if more needs to be done
you can force it more to your liking, I have found it is difficult to turn time
back on your knife.

Re: Patina
You could first clean the blade with alcohol then put in it white vinegar to 10-15 minutes. Afterwards rinse it with water then neutralize the vinegar by putting the blade in water for 30 seconds with a spoonful of baking soda stirred it. Neutralizing should minimize any etching from continuing after the vinegar soak. You could instead get a paper towel wet with vinegar and wrap it around the blade.
Coffee is another option instead of vinegar.

Yesterday I sliced up some potatoes with my new Case Sodbuster, also used it to cut up my pork chops, started a nice light patina, today made a peanut butter sandwich with it, that added a little more patina...this is fun!

You have to post photos of your patina adventure

This is the new knife, a large Case Sodbuster. I sliced some potatoes for frying and cut my pork chops with it. The next day made a peanut butter sandwich, spreading the p/butter with it. I think it's coming along nicely.

Just seeing this thread, Warhorse. It would have been cool to see progression pictures; fresh out the box, after the first month, 6 months later, etc.
