Mel, ever since I first saw the Rough Ryder Reserve Quillcliffe I thought it looked a lot like the China Queen Sawcut Wharncliffe. Even wondered if perhaps they were both made on the same frame at the same factory But, the Queen measures only 3 5/8”, so as similar as they seem, I now see they are not quite as identical as I had thought.

I thought exactly the same, that the RR would be the same as the Queen. I thought that the Queen name was owned by Frost, but I have noticed that RR is making a RR branded teardrop peanut that appears identical to a Queen branded peanut, so I am confused about who owns what. The RR is a very nice knife: blade has a good snap but not a nail breaker, blade perfectly centered in the well, perfect run up, is that the term(?) where the back of the blade meets the spring when open. My only quibble is that the blade could be 3/8" longer and still fit into the well.

It's somewhat unusual to find a Wharncliffe (frame) knife with a single Wharncliffe blade; most Wharncliffe frames are set up in a Whittler style configuration with three blades. The Queen Sawcut Bone Wharncliffe I posted last week is one of the few examples I have ever found of a single blade Wharncliffe frame knife. The Rough Ryder Reserve Quillcliffe that Mel posted two weeks ago is another. I'd been attracted to the RRR Quillcliffe for some time but never got one because I thought it was essentially the same knife as my Queen. But, once I learned there was a difference, I decided to go ahead and grab one for my collection.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two knives (and at the end I added my only other single Wharncliffe blade/Wharncliffe frame knife by RoseCraft called "French Broad"--all three knives are made in China). I agree with everything Mel said about the Rough Ryder although mine is slightly soft on the opening snap. I also wish the blade were a bit longer to fill the blade well better. The run up is really good, better than the Queen, but not quite as perfect as the RoseCraft. Although they're all decent knives, if I had to rate them in order of overall build quality I would rate the RoseCraft best, the Rough Ryder second, and the Queen last. To be fair, I really like the slimness and lighter weight of the Queen and would rate it as the best one for pocket friendly carry.

My newest Wharnie: RoseCraft Snake River Copperhead in Vintage Blue Bone. Love this beautiful knife Proportionally, the Wharncliffe blade is about as perfect as can be in length:width ratio and the degree of spine slope and with the swage and long pull

I told you guys that I got seduced by a couple of other knives in my search for a Queen Oar Carver. I've picked up two so far but no sign of a Queen Oar Carver! I get side-tracked easily. Now I have officially entered the world of Wharncliffe knives, here is the first one to arrive as my dollars fly away.

That's a beauty Q! I've become a fan of Rosecraft knives even though I don't like buying Chinese. I hope they make good on their plans to move manufacturing to the USA.

Q - I like the blade on that knife.

Charlie - three Wharncliffe blades on one knife is kind of overwhelming!

Toomanyknives - there is nothing humble about a CAse.

Here is my submission for this week: a Case, a Hen & Rooster, and a Fight'n Rooster. Note the variations on the shape of the Wharncliffe blades. The Case blade has what I think of as the classic Wharncliffe shape: its curve running the full length of a broad rotund blade and tang. The Hen & Rooster is similar with broad blade but the curve begins about halfway down the spine. The blade on the Fight'n Rooster is more like the slender blades on modern Trappers.

Cool blade comparison, Mel I love doing that sort of thing In fact, when I first saw the blade on my RC Snake River Copperhead it reminded me of the large Wharncliffe blade on a Case Copperlock _1549 WL and I had to compare the two. They are not quite an exact match, but they are awfully similar.
