Re: Old Elephant Toenails/Sunfish Pattern Knives
Both of the whalers are 4 3/8 inches closed a shade longer than the Case at 4 1/4 inches. I think what makes them so impressive looking is the width o f the blade, about 1 5/8 inches at the widest point.

Whalers were patterned after C Platts & Sons jumbo swellcenter knives.Bill Howard had one of mine for a year or so in his office desk.gsmith7158 wrote:Both of the whalers are 4 3/8 inches closed a shade longer than the Case at 4 1/4 inches. Roger I think I had read that fact in a prior GEC thread here somewhere but I had never seen the original. Those are fantastic!

No one did jigged worm grooved bone as good as Cattaraugus did.

Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Beautiful bone indeed. Probably Rogers "Indian Trail" jig.1967redrider wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2026 12:24 pm No one did jigged worm grooved bone as good as Cattaraugus did.![]()
Dan, those are fine examples. I especially like the last one, Appaloosa bone with the NKCA museum etch.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but I went back to Page 1. I wonder how Brett and Kathy are doing? I haven't seen JKB in a few months either, but Herb and I saw robinetn at the Mason-Dixon show last year.

Re: Old Elephant Toenails/Sunfish Pattern Knives
Nice Dimitri and Dan
Definitely is my favorite Pattern.
I especially like the last one Dan. What are the Scales made of?
I know I posted this some place else. Even though it has seen it’s better days, thought it needed to be posted here. This is the one that has helped me to buy a couple of knives. I like the Bulldog Mini/Baby elephant toes/Sunfish. They simply fit in my pocket Better.
Enjoy another of Dad’s knives
A beat up Crandal. Still very cool.
