Here's a cool old one I picked up at a flea market today. It was painted totally ROYAL BLUE!! Yes, you read that properly. It was so rusty, I had to scrape the tang to see what it was. This is what I found underneath! A Challenge Cutlery Co. Bridgeport Cigar Jack with great bone handles! If you look very closely, I left a smidge of the blue paint on the edge of the shield, and a bit on the pile side on the top left. You can't see it until I blew up the pictures.

It still has fantastic walk and talk, and sharpened up like a razor. Half stops work as they should, And, it has tons of natural patina. The best part was
the dealer I got it from brought it for me because I have helped her price some of her knives before, and she just wanted me to have it. FREE!!

Man, I love old knives!!

Thanks, tmk! I’ve never heard of that before, and of course, I wouldn’t have known what to do to get paint off a knife without damaging it. Good job, man!

Sweet!!! .... TMK, That is a great score! ..... I found that using a wire wheel on a grinder will pull the rust right off in a fast way and is not as abrasive as steel wool (that is my take just from appearance, as the wheel seems to leave no scratch marks as I have had marks left by steel wool... not sure why it appears that way ... maybe I'm just nuts? .

I used to soak old rusty knives in vinegar every time, then I had the vinegar destroy the handle material a couple of times if the knife was left soaking too long. I lost a very nice pair of bone scales on a Camillus, once ... so I went to a different system....

Thanks TD! I try to use different methods on knives I don't want to destroy. I always use 0000 Steel wool, and try not to go too nuclear on them!
