Sharpening Stones thread

Here is another one from the big lot posted above. I wanted to try my hand at lapping a stone and this was a good one to use because of the crack. After two hours with silicone carbide on a plexiglass plate it is relatively smooth. What's interesting is the crack doesn't hinder its usability for sharpening knives. I don't think I'd try a small chisel or gouge on it. The stone is wedged into the red pine box with a metal shim, so it lapped flat despite the crack. I really like this one's color. It seems to be less aggressive than the other stones I highlighted. There are two cut nails set into the bottom of the box to keep it from sliding on a wood work bench.

That is a nice lot of old stones. It is fun sorting and figuring out what is what when a lot like that arrives. I have never tried lapping a stone: two hours would try my patience, I fear. Very cool post.

Thanks Mel, I plan to show more as I sort through them and have time to photograph them. Most of these are really cupped, so it takes a while to lap them. Plus lapping is like sharpening. It takes a while to get the technique down. Both tend to be kind of meditative. Although lapping is harder work.

Hi I'm new here but really lucked out and found one of these 1930s case sharpeners. No oiler with it but was hoping mayne someone knows what oiler it originally came with ti get it complete. Stones has some use but it's intact. Any help would be appreciated, but I know that's a tough answer to get(at least I think so)

Welcome to AAPK. You didn’t provide a picture so I can only guess that you may have found an old “counter hone”. If so there are several different versions shown earlier in this thread, including this post showing a cut of one from an old Case catalog. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... 53#p410953 The earlier ones had round cans, the later ones had a can with a rectangular bottom that were branded Case Honing Oil. You can find similar old round-bottom oil cans at antique dealers and flea markets. The rectangular ones that said Case Honing Oil appear for sale occasionally on eBay. The hones and cans often became separated so I doubt anyone knows the specific brand name of the original round oil can. Just measure the diameter of the hole on yours and find one that fits. You’ll be the only person that knows it’s not original!

First time I looked at this thread in my two years with AAPK.
I like it like all the sharpening stones everyone. I know I have at least one dad collected it is in the box. I think there’s a little round advertisement one and another in a wooden box. Looks like I have too get digging.
