Chinese made Robeson knives on SMKW

Has anybody bought one of the new Robeson knives being offered by SMKW? They look pretty exciting. They are Chinese made. The red bone, swell center moose and congress Jack look neat. $25 a piece is decent. What do you think?

I’ve been seeing those on Ebay for a few months now. It does look like they are trying to offer the old patterns that they had while Queen was making them years ago, which I like. But I honestly can’t buy one made in China. Just like I won’t buy the Queen knives made in China. I don’t see the point. Not really a collectible and there are an awful lot of other Chinese made knives at that same price point. SMKW has done this with almost every brand that they bought up and the knives are all priced about the same and probably all made in the same plant that makes their Rough Ryder knives. So again, what’s the point? I would be interested to know about the quality, but I’m guessing that they are at the same level of quality that Rough Ryders are.

I really hate it when the take an old American knife name and have them made in China.
I would never buy one.
To me this is different from using a name that was never an old American company.

Amen. And especially when the patterns being made and sold using the American company name were never made by the old American company. Often represented and advertised as “reproductions”. Reproductions of what?

I think that if that knife appealed to me, then I would buy one. And if I liked it, I would buy a second one. To me, those cheap China knives represent an opportunity to try out different patterns that I will probably never try if the knives are more expensive. And the Robesons are probably out of the same factory that makes Rough Ryders, which tend to be pretty good knives.

Just watch out for Ebay vendors. I notice that some of the knives that SMKW sells for less than $20 are being offered on Ebay for $36.

We all know Robeson knives manufactured by a US company named Robeson are artifacts for archeologists. I was happy buying Robesons that someone contracted Queen to make. Are there any fragments of Queen's bones left in their casket or just dust? For years SMKW Chinese Marble's knives, most of which appear to come from the factory that makes Rough Ryders, have been good values. Better Chinese Marble's knives than Pakistan Marble's fixed blades. Being heart broken over the demise of Robeson as a knife maker makes about as much sense as crying into your pillow over the loss of your junior high school girl friend. Get over it, get back to your wife and if you don't like what's happened to American cutlery manufacture buy a few new traditional Case knives this year. Buying only knives made by long gone American factories does nothing to keep the American factories still producing knives solvent.

It seems pretty cogent to me. Perhaps MSJ is a bit poetic in making his points, but I am okay with that. I certainly agree that buying old knives made by businesses that no long exist does not help those businesses. They are dead. Sometimes a person just has to accept that something he esteemed is gone. The Queen that us older fellows liked is dead. Refusing to buy new knives with the old names, made by other companies, is a way of mourning. It does not actually accomplish anything outside the mind of the person. Just my opinion.
