Somewhere in a corner of my house, after brushing away a layer of cobwebs and dust I found this.

Re: Knife Photography
There are quite a few more out there than I have but with Case basically dropping the pattern the number will dwindle. There will be no more American made canoes if Case stops. GEC and Bear & Son might offer one every once in a long while but I'm not optimistic at all about the future of the pattern I've spent my whole life with

Is that handle aluminum, Fingers? I’ve got a couple of aluminum handle Halloween knives from Bear & Son. I like yours!

Re: Knife Photography
I think I may have accidentally discovered a way to ameliorate the focus disparity between a close object and a distant background: only put large, mostly amorphous, non-detailed objects in the background, i.e., don't have anything that requires particularly sharp focus or precise definition in order to to be interpreted such as written words/numbers or faces, for example. Large "blobs" of color (plants/trees, ocean, etc.) or irregular shapes (rocks/mountains, clouds, etc.) don't necessarily need to be in perfect focus as the brain will automatically correctly interpret them for what they are as long as they're relatively recognizable. This isn't a perfect solution, but it's surely something to think about next time you want to try taking pictures of a knife with sweeping vistas or a panoramic background
Here's the photo I took on my outing this morning that led to my "a-ha" lightbulb insight:

Re: Knife Photography
Back in my 35mm days, Q, the best way to get foreground and background in focus (depth of field) was to put the f-stop on the camera lens to f16 which reduces the lens opening. On the flip side, a lower f-stop - most lenses go down to f1.8 or something similar - gives a crisper photo. Of course, like everyone else, I’ve been taking pics with a cell phone for years and never learned how to get depth of field on these complicated devices!
BTW, I think you made a great photo!

Re: Knife Photography
Yes, I should have mentioned that I use my iPhone for all my picture taking now. I mostly like the photos it takes; however, the field of depth issue is my one complaint with it. I don't recall having that problem with the little digital cameras I used before I got my iPhone, but the ones I used had options for different settings (like f-stop) that my iPhone doesn't have.tvic wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2026 9:59 pm Back in my 35mm days, Q, the best way to get foreground and background in focus (depth of field) was to put the f-stop on the camera lens to f16 which reduces the lens opening. With the past few days having been warm and rain free we've been walkin' the wild side again. Gotta' let Billy run off some of his cabin fever.

Thanks.
I'm not sure what the stone is. It looked almost volcanic, like lava rock.

Thanks Kevin.
This is a pic from my photo archive that I shot for a past ST. Paddy's Day. With GREEN beer only a week away I thought I might start showin' some GREEN.
