Hey, thanks for letting me joining y’all’s group! I’ve got an older knife an older friend gave me. Maybe someone here can help identify it.

D.R.G.M. Stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster. A German registered patent mark used between 1891 and 1945.

It is an Eye Brand sodbuster.

That’s very interesting. Is this knife rare? A friend in his 80’s gave me this knife. Did they have variations like the amount of blades? This one has a straight blade and a saw blade. Is there a preferred way to perform a deep cleaning? What are the absolute don’t do’s when cleaning and maintaining a knife like this? It definitely has some heft to it. Did this German manufacturer dissolve after WWII?

Eye Brand is the trademark brand name of the German cutlery Carl Schlieper. There is an entire subforum about them here on AAPK. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... .php?f=127 Some folks collect them. They’re not generally rare, and the Sodbuster is a well known pattern of theirs.

The knife has carbon steel blades, which unlike stainless steels will oxidize. It has a nice patina, which is a form of iron oxide that carbon steel develops with age. You can shine it up but eventually the patina will return. It’s not a problem, and in fact some folks will force a patina on the blades because it helps retard red rust. As far as cleaning that knife, I would wipe it with an oily rag, then put one small drop of oil onto the pivot of each blade.
