On a different note, I started re-reading some books I read as a youth. Zane Grey was a favorite of mine especially because he did a lot of writing and fishing in northern Arizona. I had camped and hunted in many of the same areas where he fished and had a cabin. Anyway, that brought to mind the pics below that I took when I acquired a Ka-Bar fishing knife endorsed by Zane Grey with his signature etched on the master blade.

Agree, they did come out well ::nod:: Perfect knife for the setting. Was that planned our a happy accident? Sometimes it works out well, or better, if the photos are totally spontaneous instead of meticulously orchestrated. I do both types, but I'm usually happier with my spontaneous photos because my expectations are lower than they are with my intentionally posed or artificially set up photos. But, it can go either way.

Great example of meticulously orchestrated photos that turned out well. From the yellow color of knife and books linking them chromatically to the fishing connection linking them thematically all the elements work together perfectly. The personal anecdote adds a contextual aspect that would be impossible to capture visually but greatly enhances the narrative effect of the photo. Well done, Squach...calendar worthy, borderline professional shots! ::tu::

I like your Silver Streak shot, Fingers. Nice contrast of smooth metal on the multi-textured plant. What kind of plant is that, anyway? Looks like some exotic fan coral I'd see while snorkeling or maybe some kind of cabbage or cauliflower. Pretty cool looking whatever it is ::nod::

I have a Western fishing knife that looks identical to your Ka-Bar fishing knife, it is a great EDC. Yours is purdy cool endorsed by Zane Grey with his signature etched on the master blade. My mom had a about 1000 Zane Grey and Louis La 'amor books around the house when I was a kid.

I wondered if they are the same knife, made by KA-BAR, and research shows that Ka-Bar is a brand name associated with Union Cutlery Company, which produced knives for Western States Cutlery Co. While KA-BAR did not produce knives for Western directly, they did make knives under contract for Western States Cutlery Co.... ::hmm:: So that might explain the resemblance between the knives.

My morning romp-around-the-hood netted these pics of a sweet little GEC #22 Bullet that Tom 'bestgear' recently bombed on me. I love the Antique Autumn color of the smooth bone handle. I think it looks really good by the wood fence in my third pic ::nod::

Mahalo, T-Dog....that was one of those times when I was passing by something that I've gone past a zillion times without giving it a second thought, but for some reason this time I decided it would make a good back drop. Totally unpremeditated, unplanned and spontaneous. Funny how that happens. The trick, I guess, is to always be looking at familiar things with fresh eyes....which is easier said than done.

Thanks Q. The shots of the Schrade Scrimshaw were semi-spontaneous. I got the Schrade out because I wanted a knife I hadn't photographed recently. Then came the decision to go to the grove instead of the wild side because rain was coming and the grove is closer so we might get a walk in before it comes down on us. I have quite a few Schrade Scrimshaw knives and had simply grabbed one that was in the front of the drawer. As we approached the creek is when it clicked with fish theme.

Those Books were My Dads. He had the complete works of Zane Grey in a hard-back set that he acquired when I was a toddler. They were originally white but yellowed over the years. Being a fan of Grey I jumped at the chance to purchase the knife when I saw it and the books, which are now mine, were the natural backdrop for a pic.

There were so many "contract" knives in cutlery history that it's hard to keep up with. Union Cutlery, as I understand it, is where Ka-Bar started with Union Cutlery being like a parent company. Union Cutlery was also a cutler that made knives for other brands under contract so it is entirely possible that your Western is related somewhere on that family tree. It's a web of cutlers that is still being woven today as names and trade marks are sold and acquired. BTW, the case fishing knife is almost identical as well. While Case has had knives made under contract I don't know if there is any connection there.

I like your photo Fingers. The Silver Streak is a solid knife and your background looks like something edible. Knife + potential food = Squach thinking of dinner! ::super_happy:: ::clapping::

Nice photos, Charlie. The fish knife with those old Zane Grey books evoked a bit of nostalgia for me. I loved Zane Grey's westerns when I was in my teens. The ones about gunfighters and rustlers, anyway: the romance books not so much. I have gone back and reread some of them in recent years.

Very well arranged photo, Fingers. Good eye for a Backdrop, Q.

Thanks Mel (my late father’s name). I’m always looking for an interesting background for a photo while I’m out. I’ve been using an iPhone but it’s more challenging than a camera due to the lens placement.

Me too……always looking for possible photo sites. Sometimes I’ll see a site that has potential for a particular knife in my collection and I have to remember to dig that knife out of storage to bring with me the next time I’m there. But usually I just look for settings that would be interesting to photograph the knife I happen to be carrying at the time.

Such was the case with this old Schatt & Morgan sleeveboard: all these pics were taken in the parking lot while I was waiting for my wife at her chiropractor appointment.

This morning's outing.....couldn't find anywhere I liked for my backdrop setting so I settled on this crumbling rock wall. Not very picturesque perhaps, but at least it doesn't draw attention away from the knife and its details which are really enough to make the photo interesting, IMO.

Nice set here ::tu::

What kind of tree is that? It's as cool to look at as the knife, which in gaming terms looks to be of at least epic quality if not legendary.

According to my botanist friend/professional landscape artist that’s a Phoenix Roebelinii, aka Pygmy Date Palm. I imagine you probably don’t see too many of those in your neck of the woods!

Mahalo Kevin ::handshake:: Unlike you and a few others I know, I never could open a Russlock with one hand, but the protruding arm is easier for me (using two hands) than most nail nicks due to my weak fingernails. Too bad it’s so uncomfortable to carry in the pocket (not to mention ugly!) Another well-intentioned concept that failed in execution, IMO.

I saw that Tony’s got Rosecrafts on sale and it inspired me to tote my Nolichucky Jack around the yard while doing some chores this morning. Like all my RCs, it has really grown on me. Fabulous knife!

::hmm:: .... Funny Sas, that you should mention how "names and trademarks are sold and acquired" ... I just happened upon one of your trademark brands and I had to give it a try, and it is pretty darn good 👍👍 Nice work!

Well, Sasquach you must be making a fortune 💰💰💰 from all of your product endorsements and licensing of your likeness... ::suspense:: Now I understand how you can afford such an extravagant, beautiful and expensive knife collection.... ::nod::

Really beautiful bone on your Schatt & Morgan sleeve board, 👍👍 I am partial to the spear point blade with a long nail nick. That is a wonderful knife. Is it pre-1922 manufactured? ::hmm:: ...Also, a very nice variation on the lighting in your pictures in your post. ::nod::
