The easiest way to identify genuine pearl is to shine a light on it and look for the colors to show. Some pieces will show more color than others. If there is no color,it is likely synthetic. On some larger pieces,you may see layering similar to ivory, tortoise shell,or laminated wood. This can be either natural or pieced together. I have several large(about one foot long)pieces that form parts of a ladies fan that were put together this way.

A really unique handle on that knife. I kind of like it: it makes me wonder if the maker did not had wide enough pieces of MOP and had to use the ivory to make it work. Or maybe he had a few slivers of ivory he wanted to use somewhere. Or he just liked that look. Very cool!

Some random pearls. The ones l find unusual are the fluted ones. Although most that l have seen are German, l do have a bone handled one from Sheffield(Wilson bros.) as shown for display. The leg knife also has some beautifully engraved initials.

A tip for determining if the handle is real pearl is to rub the handle against your natural teeth. If pearl it will feel rough like fine sandpaper. Plastic will feel smooth. I once had an old cogger tell me I was crazy But later learned his mouth full of false teeth wouldn't work.

A few days ago, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. It now becomes my most recent example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it did turn out to be a keeper. It did get added to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is a GRIFFON XX, two blades, four tang stamps, 3 1/8" closed, one spring, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "griffon (written, underlined) (over) XX (over) B' PORT. CT." The main blade back tang stamp is the image of a "Griffon" The secondary blade front tang stamp says, "griffon (written, underlined) (over) XX (over) B' PORT. CT." The secondary blade back tang stamp is the image of a "Griffon" The main blade does have a GOOD half stop. The main blade does have a GOOD opening snap. The main blade does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. The secondary blade does have a GOOD half stop. The secondary blade does have a GOOD opening snap. The secondary blade does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. Even with the hairline crack in the handle or scale, this pocket knife is still in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.
