Thanks Q. I've always been partial to the dappled light created by the sun leaking down through the foliage. I had to use that dictionary myself, I couldn't even pronounce "chiaroscuro" let alone know what it meant. Like they say, ya learn something new every day.

I like the perspective of the blade coming "out" towards the viewer in pic #2, and the inherent "action" of the blade stuck in the stump in pic #3 as if it's just waiting for a young Arthur to come along and pull it out (oh, wait, that legendary blade was stuck in a stone, not a tree stump and it was an English broadsword, not a French folding knife
But sometimes a photo accidentally captures a detail that makes it interesting in an unintended way like the detail that caught my eye in the top right corner of pic #1. Who’s a good boy?

Coincidentally, I also took a “sword in the stone” style pic on my outing today. Didn’t really like how it turned out though and wasn’t going to post it until I saw Squach’s similar concept pic (which is much better than mine) and decided to post it anyway just for comparison purposes. I do like the smooth blue bone contrasted against the rough gray bark in my pic.

Thanks Q. When I first started posting here people like you and Iman would make comments that I found very instructive. It was Tripple F (Scott) who suggested that I shoot from the knife point back angle.QTCut5 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 23, 2025 12:25 amI like the perspective of the blade coming "out" towards the viewer in pic #2, and the inherent "action" of the blade stuck in the stump in pic #3 as if it's just waiting for a young Arthur to come along and pull it out (oh, wait, that legendary blade was stuck in a stone, not a tree stump and it was an English broadsword, not a French folding knife)

Speaking of Excalibur, the pic below is one that I shot a while ago and have referred to as "the Excalibur shot" because, like you, my mind was triggered by the arrangement.
Who's a good boy? You mean the Tasmanian Devil of the canine class? The Mighty muscle missile? AKA Silly Billy? He is always with me when I go for a walk. I tell myself that I have to get my dog out for a walk every day when In truth it is he who needs to get me out for a walk every day. It's a symbiotic relationship. His color blends in so well in that photo and my focus was so centered on the Opinel that I didn't even notice that he had crept into the shot.

That's a pretty Rosecraft. I like the colors you captured. As you mentioned, the contrast between the smooth blue bone and the rough grey/brown bark is an eye pleaser.QTCut5 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 23, 2025 1:02 am Rosecraft among bougainvillea

Squatch, you deserve the abundant praise you received for your Opinel shots. I had to return to the photos to find the mighty muscle missile. Twice.

This is the Frost lockback with the Babe Ruth printing that I removed and had previously posted. I’d been using using my iPhone camera but switched to my camera to see the difference.

Any insights, thoughts or observations about the difference between using your iPhone versus your camera? (What kind of camera?)

Re: Knife Photography
I have been using both my cell phone (I don't have an iPhone, I strongly dislike Apple products) and a digital camera (I have two old Kodak Easy Share cameras and one "No Name" cheapo) and I have not seen a big difference in the quality of the pics taken. They all have features that I don't use (because I don't know how) so there could be difference there I haven't discovered. I usually shoot with the auto setting and the close up selection with the cameras and with the phone I just shoot as is. Indoors I avoid using the flash for knives no matter what I'm shooting pics with.

It’s a Panasonic GM-1. The Panasonic has a larger sensor with all the inherent advantages that gives. The iPhone uses AI which helps in different lighting conditions and it’s always at hand, but size matters.

Holy crapoly!!! Has that diamondback been to the taxidermist? I don't see any blur around the tail section. Hope you carry snake medicine (.22 or 12ga.) Here's a little Az snake story for you. A friend of my Granddad had gotten bitten while out on the desert. The rattler struck twice, one hit the side of his cowboy boot just above the heel and the other hit him in the calf. He got to the hospital and the only bite they found was the one on the calf. He never wore those boots again being a bit superstitious and a year or two later he gave them to my Granddad. My Granddad wore them one time and his ankle swelled up and turned purple. Long story short, They found that the snake which had bitten his friend had broken off the tip of a fang in the leather of the boot. The tip of that fang had rubbed the side of my Granddad's ankle enough to break the skin a little bit and led to an infection and mild poisoning. Needless to say, my Granddad never wore those boots again either.

That's a really great looking knife. I bought and sent one to my friend but never had the opportunity to handle one. Seeing your pictures reaffirms my choice in buying it over some of the others I was considering.QTCut5 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 23, 2025 1:02 am Rosecraft among bougainvillea

Also, the pearl on that Paul a day or so back is crazy. Old knives don't have pearl chunks that big it seems. Too bad smaug was flying around messing with your shots, still came out smoldering though.
That's my Etsy store where I sell old knives and sometimes handmade knife accessories to support my knife habbit. Thanks for looking my friend.
