Smith & Wesson history

Post by 3030remchesterCOLO »

I acquired this a few decades ago and forgot about it. Seems to be good quality but know about the actual maker. Anyone have any insight?

I cannot read the tang stamp clearly, does it say "Maine"?
Most of the Smith & Wesson knives that I have seen were imports, but yours looks well made. Definitely a beautiful knife!

The knife photography leaves something to be desired. The markings are "Smith & Wesson - Custom Made". I posted this knife on the Smith & Wesson forum. Only 2 replied and they both thought these were custom built by a factory in Seki, Japan.

This appears to be the same model. It says "SEKI JAPAN" on the back. It is also numbered on the back, but the number doesn't show well in the picture. I don't know why yours doesn't say "SEKI JAPAN", maybe the guy whose job it was to apply the blade etches was having a bad day and simply overlooked the back etch on your knife.

Thanks everyone. I bought it and forgot it and knew nothing about it.
