Recently, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT buy the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it did turn out to be a keeper and it became the latest example to be added to my general, "foreign born", pocket knife accumulation. It is a Sabre 676, two blades, one tang stamp, 3 1/4" closed, one spring, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Sabre (over) STAINLESS (over) JAPAN (over) 676" The shield is missing. The main blade has a SOFT half stop. The main blade does have a GOOD opening snap and a SOFT closing snap. The secondary blade also has a SOFT half stop. The secondary blade does have an OK opening snap and NO closing snap.Overall, this pocket knife is in GOOD condition. It did need a little bit of a cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The first “good” knife I purchased in the late 60s or early 70s was a Japanese Sabre serpentine jack. It was my daily carry before EDC was a thing. Mid to late 70s it was lost, or I think stolen by a contractor who was remodeling a bathroom. After I started searching pocket knives on eBay, I found an identical knife that I had to purchase. Of course, that led to searching for more serpentine jack knives. I need to not be sentimental about my old knives.

This morning, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. It now becomes my most recent example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, it did turn out to be a keeper. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Sabre (over) JAPAN (over) 617" The main blade does NOT have a half stop. The main blade does NOT have an opening snap. The main blade does have an OK closing snap. The secondary blade does have a WEAK half stop. The secondary blade does have an OK opening snap. The secondary blade does have an OK closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off.

This Sabre belonged to my late uncle. It was given to me by my dad recently. I cleaned it up some and started researching it just for giggles. That search led me to AAPK and sparked a new found interest in traditional pocket knives. I’ve bought a couple of old knives from folks here on AAPK and have had a wonderful time reading the forums each day. Just thought I’d share this beautiful, sentimental knife and say thanks to the group for the entertainment and information you all share.

It now becomes the most recent example to be added to my general, "foreign born", pocket knife accumulation. It is a Sabre, one blade, four tools (a cap lifter or bottle opener with a screwdriver, a can opener, and a punch or awl), one tang stamp, 3 3/4" closed (not including the bail), scouting or camping, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Sabre (over) JAPAN (over) 619" The main blade does have a SOFT half stop. The main blade does have an OK opening snap. The main blade does NOT have a closing snap. The tools open and close with no problems. The main blade has a broken tip. This pocket knife is in GOOD condition. I did NOT clean this pocket knife at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

They certainly aren't the best quality knives ever made, but I've recently developed an interest in collecting Japanese Sabre brand knives and decided to share what I have learned here. They are cheap and common, so they make a good affordable knife for a young collector or a collector on a tight budget. Sabre was a brand owned by Cole National Corporation, a company based in Ohio that dealt in a number of different markets. For a number of years Cole even owned Ka-Bar. The Sabre brand can be found on knives made all over the world, including Germany, Japan, USA, Pakistan, and Hong Kong. I've focused on the Japanese line as it seems to have been the most popular and longest lived of them. They were affordable knives, ones to give away, or to throw in a tool box or tackle box and not worry about. The Japanese made Sabres came in a variety of patterns and used a standard pattern number system. The earliest knives had no pattern numbers stamped on them but would fit into the standard system used later. Next, patterns began to be marked using a simple two digit number, and finally a three digit number. The three digit pattern numbers are all the same as the two digit, except with a "6" preceding the two digit number. For example, a "29" Large Barlow became a "629" Large Barlow, with no change in the actual knife. Sixes tend to look like fives on certain bad/damaged stamps they used. Japanese Sabres changed in material and manufacture through the years. They began with carbon steel blades, nickel silver bolsters, brass pins/liners and bone handles, and evolved to using all stainless blades and fittings and plastic handles.

I know this post is old but I just found 3 today in the original boxes and 2 master cartons. I believe two of the 616 and one 642 in faux pearl handles.

Stumbled on this thread looking for info on this old Sabre Japan knife I found. It’s in rough shape, but seems to be pre-stamps? Didn’t see any other photos like it in this thread so figured I’d contribute since it’s still active!

It did get added to my general, "foreign born", pocket knife accumulation. It is a Sabre, three blades, one tang stamp, 2 5/8” closed, two springs, stockman, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Sabre (over) STAINLESS (over) JAPAN (over) 638" The main blade does have a WEAK half stop. The main blade does have an OK opening snap. The main blade does NOT have a closing snap. The secondary blade does have a WEAK half stop. The secondary blade does have a GOOD opening snap. The secondary blade does have a GOOD closing snap. The third blade does have a WEAK half stop. The third blade does have an OK opening snap. The third blade does have a GOOD closing snap. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. This pocket knife did NOT need cleaning.
I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.
