What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Got an email about Half Face Blades and on the crescent hawk hatchet, it clearly states “open teng” twice. Was that a misprint or am I just that ignorant and never heard this before? Looking at the hatchet I can’t figure out what they are referring to. Try googling teng and it will change it to tang or tent again and again.
Thanks Mark

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
I asked an AI App and it should read, “open tang” and it likely refers to a hatchet whose blade tangs extends the entire length of the handle and beyond to provide a pry bar or possibly an opening to through which a lanyard is attached or as a device to hang the hatchet on a nail or hook.

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Thanks Charlie, my Google AI kept changing it to tang as well, but the ad clearly had it twice as teng, which I had never heard of. Given what you described, that would make sense. It is a handy looking hatchet and wouldn’t surprise me that it has pry bar capability. Thanks again.RobesonsRme.com wrote: ↑Sun Aug 17, 2025 11:29 am I asked an AI App and it should read, “open tang” and it likely refers to a hatchet whose blade tangs extends the entire length of the handle and beyond to provide a pry bar or possibly an opening to through which a lanyard is attached or as a device to hang the hatchet on a nail or hook.

What is a hatchet blade's tang? I would have guessed the portion with a straight bottom between the center with the eye for the handle and where the blade flares downward on a Hudson Bay axe but that can't extend down the length of the wood handle. Is it the whole handle shaft on an Estwing?

Let's see a picture of what you are asking about.Sharpnshinyknives wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 5:55 pm Got an email about Half Face Blades and on the crescent hawk hatchet, it clearly states “open teng” twice. Was that a misprint or am I just that ignorant and never heard this before?
It's a sad day in this community when you have to "ask" AI for an answer

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Here is the exact wording from Half Face Blades website: “ Crescent Hawk- Black G10, Armor Black Cerakote, Allen Bolts, Chaos Grip, Open Teng”.
Here is a photo of hatchet. Other websites that offer this for sale say “open tang” and not “open teng”. So I am not certain what to think about this, still confused but I think Charlies answer is probably correct since this says it can be used as a pry bar.

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Looking at the picture I can see the handle's similarity to a full tang knife which must be where calling its hanndle steel a tang came from so I agree Charlie gave the best answer.
Since I am not wildly enthusiastic about hatchets stamped out of flat stock I have instructed the Tom cat beside me to give me a vicious slashing if he sees something impolite in this response. On my walk a month ago I happened across two young couples camping. (I don't live in town.) One of the men was using one to batten straight grain fire wood. He was happily acomplishing what he wanted so I kept my hatchet advise to myself. The lower half of his handle was wrapped in para-cord. AAPK members have written that in some regions of the USA they are used for skinning big game. The hatchet being discussed in this thread's concave edge would make it unusable for skinning. It is the first one Ive seen with a concave edge. It is also the first one I've seen that has handle sides extending up to the head. They must be intended to provide a more comfortable grip while using it as a pry bar. I think they'd get in the way battening. What is this tool's primary use?

I think its primary use is to to separate money from people.

I agree with Mel that its primary use is to separate people from their money. I can’t see any use for that blade at all, except for self defense. This hatchet cost 650 dollars. That’s a heck of a lot to pay for something that can’t be used as a hatchet. You could buy a gun for what this costs if self defense is what you are buying it for.Modern Slip Joints wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2025 2:39 am Looking at the picture I can see the handle's similarity to a full tang knife which must be where calling its hanndle steel a tang came from so I agree Charlie gave the best answer.

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
True Tom, I’m sure there are many folks that can’t buy a gun, even here in the USA. That’s a wicked looking blade on that hatchet. I can usually look at a blade design and see its intended purpose, but when I look at that blade on this hatchet, all I can see it used for is defense or offense. It would inflict a lot damage on anyone or anything on the receiving end of it.bestgear wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2025 12:16 pmspoken like a true American Mark but for the other 194 countries in world, that’s not quite as easy to doSharpnshinyknives wrote: ↑Mon Aug 18, 2025 11:04 amYou could buy a gun for what this costs if self defense is what you are buying it for.![]()

When in doubt, go to the horse's mouth.
I sent an email to the company asking for a definition.
We will see if I get a reply.

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Thanks zzyzz, that was a step I was about to take. This open teng threw me as I had never heard of it before. Occasionally someone will use a term for a part of a knife that I am unfamiliar with and then I look it up. But I was getting no where trying to find out what an open teng is. So best thing to do is ask the experts here about it. Glad I am not the only one that has not heard of this.

Re: What is an open “teng” on a hatchet?
Just got a message back from the company, thanking me for pointing out the "typos".
Open teng is supposed to be open tang. This is a reference to the tang extending beyond the end of the handle, where the lanyard hole runs through the exposed tang.
They must be fixing it as the page is currently dead on their website.

Thanks zz, now I don’t feel like so ignorant. Wasn’t sure if these was a term I hadn’t heard before or if it was a new term that comes out from time to time like “hack”. Can’t tell you how sick I am of hearing that one.zzyzzogeton wrote: ↑Tue Aug 19, 2025 1:27 am Just got a message back from the company, thanking me for pointing out the "typos".

Think of it this way. It’s a full tang hatchet with applied handles.
