Green Synthetic Handle

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

The factory handle is made of karolith, an early plastic that is different from celluloid. It is a casein based material and I think KA-BAR only used it for a short time because they are seldom seen. Your knife is a model 71 and I have only seen that handle on models 71 and 82. If you looks closely you will see the handle is made of thick layers glued together.
