What's Currently on Your Reading List?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

I've been picking up any old books on local history that i find. Im currently reading these two. The local native history is absolutely fascinating, and simultaneously so tragic. 20 years into Oshkosh's history and there's been so much slaughter ::tear:: Also, Oshkosh was known as the Midwest's sawmill. Sawdust city burned to the ground 6 times before they started using more brick

Steve, the statement at the bottom on the cover of your book, the merciless Indian wars in America, caught my eye. I'm reading a historical novel named, What We Have Endured. It is written from the view of an old Seminole woman telling her granddaughter what she remembered about the Seminole Wars. Times were very tough back in those days.

Skip, I have read a fair amount about Hitler’s Germany. Started with Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich when I was 13.
The lady at the library didn’t think I should read “that”!
Recently have read a lot about the concentration camps and the stories of the survivors.
Considering the current state of the country some of these should be required reading. To me it is mind boggling how one man had so much influence over an entire country.

Here is another book that I bought, forgot that I had it, and never read it.
It got misplaced when I moved. I discovered it again by accident.
Should be interesting. This will take me to this July 4th weekend.
From 2004.

“The Wright Bros”

Wanted to throw out a book recommendation that I think a lot of folks here would appreciate — especially those of us who admire craftsmanship, tenacity, and good old American ingenuity. It’s The Wright Brothers by David McCullough.

Hard to believe, but exactly 125 years ago this summer, in 1900, Wilbur and Orville Wright were preparing for their very first trip to Kitty Hawk. These were two humble bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio — no formal engineering training, no government funding — just curiosity, brains, and grit.

What struck me most reading this book was just how hands-on these guys were. They built their own wind tunnel to test airfoils. They carved their propellers from laminated spruce — shaping and refining them with care that reminded me of how some of us feel about jigging bone or tuning a slipjoint’s walk and talk. They even used a spoke wire tensioning system on the Flyer’s wings that reminded me of tuning a knife’s backspring.

McCullough doesn’t just write history — he brings it alive. You feel the salt air at Kitty Hawk, the long cold nights in their canvas tent, and the isolation they endured — hundreds of miles from home, chasing something the world thought was impossible.

If you’ve ever been fascinated by the blend of persistence, craftsmanship, and problem-solving that goes into making a great knife — this book will speak your language.

Would love to hear what books others here recommend — history, memoir, bushcraft, anything that pairs well with a pocketknife and a quiet evening.

Stay sharp,
Joe
