Dave Shirley Marbles

Webster Marble formed Gladstone Mfg. Co. in 1892. That company created the first folding Axe in 1893 which lead to the incorporation of Marble's Safety Axe Co. in 1898. The company became Marble Arms & Mfg. Co. in 1911 & enjoyed years of success until succumbing to a shut down of production in 1974. The brand was brought back to life in 1994 & enjoyed a grand rejuvenation that later gave way to another shutdown in 2009. Many great knives & tools were crafted over the company's storied history.

Nice knives all, I just pretty much read the entire thread.

And I thought all along these were Chinese. I imagine they are quality, as Bill Howard was still at Queen. I've never held one . Too bad Bill Shirley never patterned the rooster comb. :)

Beautiful Hardman, I think I was bidding against you for that one if you picked it up recently on eBay. Nice stag on that.

Got this Marbles Gladstone MI Congress with red carved stag bone to add to the collection. Here it is in a group of Marbles and other groupings of Marbles.

Picked this one up the other day. Thought I already had this but discovered that I didn’t. Not the greatest looking stag but still pretty nice. This half Congress is from 2003 when Dave Shirley was overseeing the manufacturing of these after Mike Stewart stopped making these in 2001.

Acquired another EO English Jack or tear drop jack. This one in buffalo horn. Looks good with all the other EO and Jacks.

Those are nice Tim. That muskrat does not appear in the history of these knives I’ve found. They didn’t make the same number of those apparently in 2001, I’ve never seen that pattern produced in 2001, but the jigged bone matches others made that same year. I would love to know how many of these were made? It is rare indeed.

I should have taken a picture of the backside. The blade says one of four hundred.

400 matches the number made in 01, but that pattern is not included in the list of patterns that I found from that year. This is interesting. I’m stumped and wonder if there are other handle materials that these were made with in a muskrat pattern? This is the first 01 muskrat that I have seen. I would love to hear from others that know more about these Marbles knives made in that time frame.
Thanks for showing that backside view. None of the other patterns from 01 have the numbers stamped on them, but the ones made in 02 and 03 do, so I wonder if there had been plans for the muskrat in 01 that got pushed off into 02 or 03?

Here is another 2001 Marbles Muskrat. This one is in Greenbone that I have never seen. It came with box and pouch.

Recently acquired a small collection of Dave Shirley Marbles folders from 2001/2002 with their original boxes. I came across this thread while researching and see you guys have posted some gorgeous Marbles folders over the past few years.

Mark & Gary...you have some amazing sub-collections of these beautiful knives. ::tu::
