pictures or catalogs of interesting long pull designs

Hi all,

I am a custom knifemaker with a laser, a dangerous thing. I'll be making some straight jacks soon with long pulls. I've used a cutter in the past for basic rectangular shaped long pull. I'm experimenting with how to create different designs based on old photographs or catalog pictures. Getting the shape right is one thing, but contour is more difficult.

I was able to recreate a jagged Remington long pull from just a catalog picture, see attached. In hindsight, the jagged pull probably didn't go the best with that pattern/scale.

I'm looking for ideas of interesting long pulls used in vintage knives. If you had a picture from a real knife or from a catalog picture to share I'd appreciate it. indicating the brand, model would be helpful too.

Not sure what you’re meaning by “interesting long pulls”. I have a lot of older knives having long pulls (aka French pulls) but they’re all either straight or dentate styles. Here’s an example that’s a little different - it has two pulls. The knife is a Phoenix Cutlery Co. large (over 5 inches closed length) coke bottle hunter with both a high pull and a low pull. Having a second pull placed toward the tip of the blade is a nice feature on a knife that size as it gives the user more leverage to open the blade. Seems more commonly seen on this pattern and other large knives.

I like some of the older style where the long pull goes back to the end of the tang. I don’t have a pic of one but have seen them. I like the match strike style like you made too.

I think the dentate pull on your jack looks great. Beautiful knife just as it is.
I wonder though what a pull design based upon the similar scroll work as your bolster would have looked like. Maybe just a little heavier on the cut to allow for more fingernail purchase.
But again, that jack is beautiful the way it is.
