Another CASE question

I have a couple of knives that are clearly CASE knives, but the words "CASE xx" have been obviously scratched or ground out. U.S.A. is still there, and so are the pattern numbers. Examples are the Kodiak hunting knife and the Naughty Lady HA199 1/2. Does anyone know why someone would do this?
Also, I have a beautiful Case set of two knives...gunstock pattern . They are called the GUNS THAT TAMED THE WILD WEST : The peacemaker ( #5215) and the Lever action (#5230). They are gorgeous stag, still new in the box from 1989. etched on the bolster of each knife is 0317 (COA says there were 3000 made). Does anyone have a clue how much this set would be worth since I can't find it anywhere on the computer. I found single 5215 knives with no etching, but none with the guns etched on them. AND I haven't found a 5230 at all.

I have seen that set before in Eekbay from time to time.
But I didn't have them in my watchbox to see where they ended $wise. I think a cCc member posted that set in the cCc forum recently, I'll try to backtrack and ask him what they are worth.
EekBay search for 5215 might show the set in results IF they have that in their title or descrip. Might want to do search for 'West' also and see what comes up. I'd also recommend doing the search in larger category ' modern 1970 and up', not just in 'Case'.
This larger category search will therefore include any such sets mislisted in other folder category.
Also you might want to double check the large gunstock pattern #, I'm thinking those are 52130 for stag.

As for the scratched out tang stamp, this is usually a sign that the knife is a factory second, pulled for a cosmetic or structural flaw.
Sometimes the tang is ground off other times defaced with big Xs over name brand.

This is my set #1370. I've had mine since 1989 and not sure what I paid for them or what they are worth, but I put a call in to Case to get some info on this set. When I hear from them I will post the info. It is a very nice set.

Parker's vol. 7 list the set with a value of $ 350
