New knife collection

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and recently inherited a large group of knives. I’m trying to inventory, identify, and clean them to keep them in good condition.

I’m from Bradford and grew up less than a mile from the Case factory. Previously my knife collection was limited to various Case knifes that I’ve accumulated over the years.

Now my collection includes a lot of traditional pocket knives — brands like Remington, Case, Schrade, Camillus, and others. Some of the knives are older bone-handled models, and there are a few fixed blades and advertising knives too.

I’ve enjoyed learning more about them and wanted to share an image I took of what might be half of the collection. Looking forward to any insight, comments, tips or advice anyone may offer.

First, welcome! Wow, that's a crazy amount of good looking knives. The most important tip, assuming you will be hanging on to them as opposed to selling them, is simply to enjoy them, and enjoy the process of identifying them. There's tons of info on this site, and in the internet in general.

Generally collectors try to group knives by maker/brand, quality of the knife, and/or condition of the knife.

It looks like you have a lot of bone/wood/stag handled knives. If you have any that have celluloid handles or that look like plastic, you may want to keep those separate from the others, just in case. Celluloid handles can outgas and corrode metal.

Welcome to the "club". Looks like you've got a really nice inherited collection. I can't add much to what "glennbad" said about identifying your knives and separating out any that might be celluloid. You don't want that headache. There are threads showing what an outgassing knife will do to itself and those around it. And there are many threads here with advice on how to clean up old knives, and how not to overclean them.
