SCOUT KNIFE QUESTION

The first Robeson knives were imported by Millard Robeson from England and Germany exclusively. This continued from 1979 until 1896 when Robeson began manufacturing knives in the United States. Since inception, the company has gone through several reorganizations & eventually ended up as a Queen Cutlery brand.

SCOUT KNIFE QUESTION

Post by Ridgegrass »

I have this Robeson "SCOUT" (642214). The main is worn and short. Are the screwdriver and cap lifter/opener in their original condition? There seems to be a stud missing. Thanks J.O'.

Yes, they appear to me to be original (other than wear and the missing stud). Robeson’s Shuredge Scout is unique in appearance. The Robeson guys will chime in with more info for us hopefully.
Scales are pretty.

Maybe I'm seeing things, but something seems wrong about the blade arrangement - punch and can opener should be in diferentlocations? I'll have to dig out the one I have.

Here is mine - mine was made without a shield, but seems like the shield on yours is on the back handle?

Steve I don’t have one of these and you’ve forgotten more about knives than I’ll ever know, but I think the layout matches a couple of others I found online. I think your can opener is slightly different, could there maybe have been a model change?

I think it is odd because I have never seen a scout knife by any brand/manufacturer where the punch blade is in that front position relative to the shield and the other blades. Maybe you should post this one in the Robeson forum.

Now you have me doubting my own sanity (although that happens more frequently these days). These are screen grabs from a sold eBay listing. Is this not the same layout or am I perceiving the images wrong?

In the OP knife and the Ebay listing, the cap lifter/can opener blade and the punch are not in the correct position.

I’ve seen that before. Don’t know why it was done. Intentional or worker error, I have no idea.

This is a Terrier, but it’s the same knife, made in the Robeson factory in the 1910’s.

Always something new, even from something old.
Love that Terrier.

That Terrier is a gem Charlie!

Here is a hybrid Case/Robeson frankenknife that recently sold in the polluted waters of the eBay for $125.07 plus TT&L. Frame, utility blades and handles all Robeson with the exception of the Case master blade.

It seems that the blade location varied in these Robeson scouts. Don't think any were made with Case blades like the one I show here.

Also showing a Robeson utility with no shield. It was missing the opener stud like the OP knife so I made one to try and make it more complete.

In a couple of those it looks like the scredriver is also a fine saw blade, interesting, curious what i would be good for, looks more like a file tooth.

Looks like there are variances among them. Mine has no saw teeth, the spear has the nail nick on the pile side, and the shield is way off center near the scale pin. From the looks of yours Froe, the spear was kind of short (mine is ground down), but, from the position of the nail nick, they still appear to have been somewhat stubbier then others. J.O'.

Could the blade positioning be like that of the MIL-K & utility knives? The older ones (pre 1944 I believe) had the blade and cap lifter on the same end, & the newer version had the blade and can opener on the same end. It just depended on when it was made.

Brown bone Robeson scout/utility knives without a shield may well be WWII production, although they did produce both a four and three blade version simply marked, U.S.A.

The stubby screw drivers do vary in length and some have file serrations on the underside. I wouldn’t call them saw teeth.

Shields did migrate from place to place on the front handle.

I have no idea why the nail nick would be on the opposite side of the master spear.
