Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Northern flicker!
We have them here also. They’re either geographically lost, or the name is wrong!
Around here they’re often called Yellow-shafted flickers (they have yellow “shafts” under the tail).

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Hope you enjoy it. I’ve had the Merlin app about a year, and the only problem is remembering to turn it on when I’m out and about. And trying to visually sight the birds it identifies - I can hear them too, but they’re usually hidden and well camouflaged. Without the app I wouldn't recognize their sounds either, but it has taught me a lot of them, so I now recognize what bird is making which call. I’m still learning new ones!Quick Steel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 2:23 pm Ken, thank you for the tip, I have downloaded the Merlin Bird ID and look forward to using it.

The crackles and redwing blackbirds for the most part have vacated my bird feeders, I've had a couple of robins around never see them on a seed feeder. Several bluebirds have shown up.Quick Steel wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 5:24 pm bighomer, very nice photos. Today we had some Grackles and Robins.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Thanks, Ike. I had some health issues, heart stuff, that made it hard to be interested in the rest of life. I am doing better now. I did not have a feeder up this winter, which really cut down on the birds in my garden. Here are a few photos from the last week or two.

Curious Red Crested Cardinal was checking me out while I was having lunch at a park in Honolulu last week (probably hoping for some crumbs)

You are correct, Floyd. They were introduced to Hawaii in the 1930s.

That is a very different cardinal! Nice shots of a beautiful bird. I was not aware that they had been introduced to Hawaii.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Here are some birds that visited my backyard this month. I always like seeing Bluebirds, and Mocking birds are the most common bird in my neighborhood.
My favorite: the Turkey Vulture!
