Just for info not sure why the USPS is taking so long for mail to move from South Carolina to Michigan seen like once it get's to Indianapolis IN. it just stops almost 10 day's to deliver mail that suppose be there in 3 day just venting Gary

I'm in New Jersey. Had to mail a small package to a place 45 minutes away (long story about why it wasn't just driven there). Seems USPS decided it had to go through Denver, CO first.

I've been waiting on a package mailed on February 11th in Northern Ohio,and I just got a notice that it's out for delivery today here in Southern Ohio.

Mail delivery is hit or miss for pkgs sent to me from the mainland. I just got one from PA that was shipped on a Thursday and got here on Saturday--2 DAYS!!! I also have some that take up to three weeks if they get put on a boat instead of a plane.

When I ship from HI to the mainland, however, my pkgs almost always arrive at their destination in 4 or 5 days...both Priority as well as Ground Advantage. And, BTW, USPS Ground Advantage shipping to/from Hawaii costs the exact same amount as it does for shipping on the mainland (some folks still think it's super expensive and will only ship to the lower 48).

Unfortunately with all shippers they are only as strong as their weakest link and that weakest link is subject to change based on a variety of variables. Picking the right shipper at the right time is almost impossible but certain areas of the country have habitually poor service.

USPS has been pretty bad sometimes. To top it off, the mail delivery jerk has put 3 packages on top of the mail box in lasr 3 weeks. They were knives from $268 to $4501 wE HAVE A Large box but if more than 1 pkg they are too damned lazy to bring to garage.Im gonna raise heck. Still waiting on knife from voyles auction.

Gary, there has been a lot of press about the distribution center in Indy. Apparently they consolidated a hub and the transition has been chaotic. Some trucks have sat in line for 6 hours waiting to be unloaded. Several drivers have quit over the issues. Inside the hub there are piles of boxes sitting around with no one knowing who or what is being done to handle them. You can google about it and find a lot of coverage from the local news channels. We have had problems with it too. Did a refund on a knife sold on eBay that took 28 days to go from Indiana to Kentucky. It was tracked something close to 30 times in Indy where it sat for 14 days then mysteriously went to Washington DC and had about 8 tracks there before coming back to Indy. I’ve never seen anything this screwed up before. The customer got the knife and fortunately he was nice enough to pay again for it after the refund was already made.
You might open a case with the USPS about the missing package, that’s does seem to get it moving again once it stops, we’ve had to do that 3 times this year and it seems to get action.

For about the last 2 weeks or so, I’ve been avoiding ordering merchandise from places that are east of me because that is where Indianapolis is. Louisville is in that path too and their problems are about as bad as Indy’s.

If I have to buy east of me, I will use a different carrier if possible but I haven’t ran into that scenario yet.

Let me ask something here. After 30 days you can file a claim for a lost item though the USPS web site. You have to provide proof of the purchase for the claim. I have filed 2 and both times used a screenshot from AAPK and also one from eBay. Has anyone using PayPal F&F for payment been able to file a claim and get reimbursed for it? I wonder if USPS might not squawk about that.

Just my opinion Bob, but I don’t think that would be an issue. The insurance you purchase through the USPS is a separate issue from the PayPal guarantee. We insure everything we ship. If a package doesn’t arrive we know that eBay will charge it back to us anyway, no matter that it was lost by the USPS. I think PayPal does the same thing, so I am not really sure what anyone’s protection is that doesn’t have insurance on their packages? We protect ourselves by getting the insurance every time we ship anything. Had too many lost or missing over the years and it has more than paid for itself. Hope this helps. It sounds like you were the buyer. Can a buyer receive an insurance settlement? Serious question as I always thought that the seller gets the settlement because they are the person who bought the insurance when they shipped the package. It’s up to the seller to reimburse the buyer, or so I thought.

But we know if you use PayPal F&F to pay for G&S that PayPal will not intercede on your behalf in the event of a dispute. So, if you buy a knife on Craigs List or FB Marketplace and the seller requests F&F payment, then the item is lost in the mail, and a claim must be filed. The only proof of that transaction would be the PayPal transaction page which would show F&F payment. I don't know where you would stand. I would just encourage anyone reading this to not buy from strangers using F&F payment. It may be OK among friends and honorable people, but people are dreaming up new scams every day.

As a Seller myself I have always believed it was MY responsibility to get the piece to the buyer. I have no regard for sellers who want the buyer to pay for insurance and then try to waive responsibility if the buyer doesn’t pay the extra cost of the insurance. B.S.

This has always been my outlook as well. Shipping insurance is designed to protect the seller. Making the buyer jump through the hoops to file a claim while the seller laughs all the way to the bank is just wrong.

Here’s an example of the trickery that USPS has been using lately.

I checked my tracking at about 4:00 am this morning. It showed that my package arrived at my local post office at 2:38 am and the expected delivery date was today.

I get home from work and check it again. Now that same update says that it arrived at 8:30 am and the expected delivery date is tomorrow. Thing is, they didn’t add an additional update. They simply changed the time and date on the one that was already there.

So how did they make an arrival scan at 2:38 am if it didn’t arrive until 8:30 am?

Just another one of their tricks like the recent false claims of weather delays.

Somewhere in one of these threads, Tom stated how he seems to have better luck when he has his USPS text notifications turned on.

I tried that and I’m still doing so. We have 4 packages out for delivery today and 1 scheduled for tomorrow. Each package had one delay that made it a day late but that ain’t too bad.

Not sure yet if the text notifications made an improvement or not but I have been content so far.

Then again, those packages aren’t on my doorstep yet.

These days the USPS is under the gun more than ever and performance is being measured by everyone. Signing up for informed delivery as well as getting progress text and email updates seems to improve performance, possibly because they are aware that those packages are being micromanaged.

The other key factor seems to be the quality of the shipping label which means a proper address with a 9 digit zip code and a fully readable bar code. If the tape securing the shipping label to the package comprises the bar code, the automated readers may fail forcing human intervention and slowing down the process.

Lastly, I try to ship packages so they hit the destination before or on a Friday. Having undelivered packages in USPS facilities over the weekend has been no bueno for me. YMMV
