CASE XX 61048 Handle Material Denim MIcarta?
Picked this up at Webster Monday (plan to resell, so don't answer if that bothers you).
Looking under a magnifying lens the handle is like "furry."
What the heck do I have here?
My guess is Denim Micarta?

It looks like Case’s Gray Bone but I see what you mean. Could someone have wiped it down with a cloth and the fibers got caught in the bone?

I agree it looks like the gray jigged bone. I’ve not seen Case using jigged micarta that I remember.

My guess is pocket worn gray bone.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

I have another theory.
Could be that the knife was stored wrapped tightly in a fibrous cloth for a number of years. Then sat that way so long that some of the fibers from the cloth “fossilized” themselves into the bone.
Sounds crazy but I think it’s possible.

It may be bone but IIRC that pattern was made with Delrin covers for years, maybe still.
I don't see any Haversian canals but can’t tell for sure from your pictures Scott. Here’s the “sticky” thread that explains how to tell one from the other. viewtopic.php?t=62145

I would lean towards a synthetic material vs natural material Scott simply because of what you’re observing. Even old dried bone presents differently than what you describe as furry.

My first thought was wood when you mention raised fibers. I have a Case 6275 in jigged Pakka wood that if you stripped the finish off would look like that. But was that model ever offered in Pakkawood?
