Who was DOUGLAS?.....

Dug this one out of a box of letter openers l'm re-photographing and got to thinking about the inscription scratched into both sides. How old was Douglas? Was he a youngster or an adult? Did his mother really smoke or did he just think it was cool? Did she use it a lot or was it just tossed in her desk drawer? How did it wind up at the yard sale where l bought it?
Why arent these things able to talk and tell us their stories!
