Re: Great song lyrics

Another Blaze Foley masterpiece “If I Could Only Fly” was a hit for the great Merle Haggard.

I almost felt you touching me just now
I wish I knew which way to turn and go
I feel so good, and then then I feel so bad
I wonder what I ought to do

If I could only fly, if I could only fly
I'd bid this place goodbye, to come and be with you
But I can hardly stand, and I got no where to run
Another sinking sun, and one more lonely night

The wind keeps blowing somewhere everyday
Tell me things get better, somewhere, up the way
Just dismal thiking on a dismal day
Sad songs for us to bear

If I could only fly
If we could only fly
If we could only fly
There'd be no more lonely nights

You know sometimes I write happy songs
Then some little thing goes wrong
I wish they all could make you smile
Coming home soon and I wanna stay
Maybe we can somehow get away
I wish you could come with me when I go again

If I could only fly, if I could only fly
I'd bid this place goodbye, to come and be with you
But I can hardly stand, and I got no where to run
Another sinking sun, and one more lonely night

Before the Next Teardrop Falls Freddie Fender

If he brings you happiness
Then I wish you all the best
It's your happiness that matters most of all
But if he ever breaks your heart
If the teardrops ever start
I'll be there before the next teardrop falls

Si te quiere de verdad
Y te da felicidad
Te deseo lo más bueno pa' los dos
Pero si te hace llorar
A mé me puedes hablar
Y estaré contigo cuando triste estás

I'll be there anytime
You need me by your side
To drive away every teardrop that you cried
And if he ever leaves you blue
Just remember, I love you
And I'll be there before the next teardrop falls
And I'll be there before the next teardrop falls
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Written by Vivian Keith and Ben Peters. Several other artists, including Jerry Lee Lewis, recorded it before Freddie Fender. Of course his is the only version sung partly in Spanish!

Duane Dee was the first to record "Before the Next Teardop Falls".

"Tell me you will stay. Make me smile"

From the song "Make Me Smile", Chicago, 1970, Chicago II album, with the late, great Terry Kath (1946-1978) on guitar and lead vocals. For my money, these two lines are some of the greatest lyrics ever in popular music. So simple, but so meaningful.
"Nature's been good to you. I mean real, real, REAL good. I can't remember when I've seen Nature spend so much time on any one person." Sheriff Taylor (Andy Griffith) to Ellen (Barbara Eden), The Andy Griffith Show, The Manicurist episode, 1962

The line, it is drawn, the curse, it is cast
The slow one now will later be fast
As the present now will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin'
And the first one now will later be last
For the times, they are a-changin'

Bob Dylan - The Times, They Are a-Changing

Hard to believe a 22 year old (at the time) wrote those words that are still relevant today, some 60+ years later. Timeless poetry.

We set out that night for the cold in the North
I gave him my blanket, he gave me his word
I said, where are we goin', he said we'd be back by the fourth
I said, that's the best news that I've ever heard

I was thinkin' about turquoise, I was thinkin' about gold
I was thinkin' about diamonds and the world's biggest necklace
As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold
I was thinkin' about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless

How she told me that one day we would meet up again
And things would be different the next time we wed
If I only could hang on and just be her friend
I still can't remember all the best things she said

Bob Dylan Isis

He's got a lot. One of his favorites of mine has a lot of instrumentals. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack, which he acted in. His character was Alias.😊

Paul Overstreet and Tom Schuyler wrote a song called "Trains Make Me Lonesome". It has this great rhyme: "I wonder why trains make me lonesome, Happens every time that engine moans some". Doesn't look that good in print but it's a helluva vocal rhyme. I recommend John Starling's recording of it. ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu:: J.O'.

More from the mind of Bob Dylan -
May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the light surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.
Forever Young, first recorded in 1973 was written by Dylan for his young sons. The phrase “May your hands always be busy” is in reference to Proverbs 16:27, "idle hands are the devil's workshop".

Agreed. It’s a great movie. They did a good job recreating the look and feel of the 1960s. The actor who plays Bob Dylan does a great job of singing like Dylan, without necessarily sounding like Dylan. ::tu::

Speaking of Dylan...this guy has an eerily similar sound.

Personally, I’m not a fan of Walmart, but love it or hate it, ya gotta admit these lyrics are funny.

One of my favorite Dylan tunes that sure has come true.

-"While riding on a train goin' west, I fell asleep for to take my rest.
I dreamed a dream, that made me sad, concerning myself, and the first few friends I had.

-With half-damp eyes I stared to the room, where my friends and I'd spent many an afternoon
Yeah we together, weathered many a storm, jokin' and a'talkin', till the wee hours of the morn.

-With hungry hearts through the heat and cold, we never much thought we would get very old.
We thought we could sit forever in fun, when our chances really, were a million to one

-I wish, I wish, I wish in vain, we could sit simply in that room again.
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I'd give it all gladly, if our lives could be like that.
-
-
With this movie, I'm hoping the old music will see a comeback and old guys like me, who know it all by heart, get to perform it again after so long,

Jesse Welles. I'd never heard of him until a friend sent me a YouTube video that he thought I'd like. I did. Apparently he's big on Tic Tok (which I don't use), and also has a bunch of other videos on YouTube.

Here's one that tells a bit about him:

Take me disappearing, through the smoke rings of my mind, down the foggy ruins of time
Across the windy beach, the haunted frightening trees, far past the twisted reach, of crazy sorrow.
Let me dance beneath the diamond sky, with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea
With all memory and fate, driven deep beneath the waves, let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Dylan's, "Mister Tambourine Man"
I'd like somebody to read the last two lines at my funeral, (but not too soon! :D )
