?Question on a western states folding hunter . ?

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

?Question on a western states folding hunter . ?

Post by Thomasg »

Interesting knife offed on E- Bay .I can not seem to find a single blade folding hunter offered with bone scales in the knife makers who went west .Has this knife being offered been re handled in bone or is it a factory original? Also the jigging pattern looks nothing like any western knife I have viewed .

TKWWW doesn't go back far enough. I have a circa 1925 Western States catalog with plenty of bone handled knives. KA-BAR made a lot of knives for them in the early days and the dentate pull on this knife reeks of KA-BAR. The handle jigging and color looks wrong, the jigging is close to what KA-BAR used but doesn't look quite right to me.

Thank you for your reply.the shield also looks to be a bit shinny compared to the knife blade condition ? Also the knife seller’s resume does not have the best of reviews. “Sports cob”

Oh, I didn't see the seller was Sporty!! He has a reputation for selling knives that have been messed with without saying so. Sometimes he sells really nice older knives but you gotta be really careful dealing with him.
