Kingwood Experiment

I have to confess that I'd never heard of "kingwood" before our AAPK 2024 knives were released a few weeks back. I decided to try out kingwood on an old, beat up Camillus electrician knife with cheap plastic handles that was kicking around in my box of future patients. As you can see, I modified the screwdriver blade, turning it into a wharncliffe, and amputated a good part of the of the linerlock, turning it into a center liner/divider. The scales were epoxied on and had been rough sanded in the second pic. I'm quite impressed with kingwood, and find it to be a very dense, heavy, durable wood. For some reason, after I assembled the finished knife, the wharncliffe now has what I would call normal, good, hard snap, and the primary (spear) blade is simply a monster. I'm pretty sure it would easily chop off a poorly placed finger!

I love it Herb - I’m glad the 2024 knife got your creative juices flowing in the right direction. I’ll be curious to see how the humid summers of Virginia will affect the handles. Was the hafting difficult due to the density of the wood?

Hi Tom. To answer your question, this was my first time working with kingwood and I really like it. The hafting was a little slower going than something a bit less dense like bocote, but not as dense or difficult to work as bone.

Niiiiiìiice work herbva and excellent on the Wharn. I can't tell it from Cocobolo, looks about like it. Beautiful knife now, great job.
