knife attributes

Post by duckdogs »

I have been noticing knives in eBay described as having "ambidextrous dexterity". I assume it means you could hold the knife in either hand while using it. Certainly a great quality to have in a knife. It begs the question, are there knives that are handed? How do I recognize left handed knives that have made their way into my collection? Maybe I should trade them to left handed knife collectors? Or do I have it all wrong? Thoughts?

Most of that of which you speak is not even written by humans, but by Artificial Intelligence, such as it is.

I have always assumed that “ambidextrous” refers to one hand opening folding knives that have an opening mechanism and/or lock release that can be used with either hand.

The Benchmade Griptilian for example, is an ambidextrous knife. Frame locks and liner locks are not because of the placement of the lock release.

Generally, “ambidextrous” is only relevent describing the use of knives entirely with one hand from pocket then back to pocket so Railsplitter posted the best answer.

However, Case assembled traditional slip joints with all their nail nicks on the pile side that were sold as left handed knives. I remember left handed Trappers in which all Case had to do was use blades left over from making 3 and 5 bladed Trappers. SMKW who sold Case 3 and 5 blade Trappers auctioned Case left handed Trappers through ebay.

For your amusement I'll describe a Remington branded liner lock with 3 long blades for members smarter than me to name ambidextrous or not. All blades open from the same end. Two blades open out of the top each with liner locks pressed in from their side of the knife. The third blade opens out of the center of the bottom and has a right handed liner lock. 2/3 right handed and 1/3 left handed?

More blades are merrier! ::ds::

Chris Reeve Knives makes left-handed knives because the frame lock is best accessed from one side. The knives are designed with thumb lugs and locks that allow for easy one-handed operation. You order his knives based on dexterity.

The other key difference between a right-handed and a left-handed knife is how the blade is sharpened. It applies only to single bevel and serrated knives but the blade is sharpened on the opposite side to a right-handed knife and this makes it easier to achieve a straight, neat cut.

You are correct. AI descriptions are easy to spot once you've seen a few.
