Yesterday our gun deer season started here in Wi. And niece Laura dropped this Buck. Check out those brow tines! Talked to several different groups of hunters last night and it seems to be a bit quiet for some ,like not a single deer . A county or 2 over and all kinds of deer.

Just a couple of comments concerning opening day of the 4 day Thanksgiving deer season.
1st time I can recall not going on opening day however 2 grandsons took up the slack.
Last evening they reported what they had observed from the 2 stands we will use this season. Grandson #1 saw a small buck and a doe and #2 reported seeing about 30 does. Well, you know how we tend to embellish our hunting tales so I took that with a grain of salt. Fast forward 24 hours, I rode down to the shooting house he had sat in and guess what? I quit counting at 20! A few minutes after I got settled in a little after 3pm the parade started. I sat till dark and always had a deer in sight. Granted some maybe walked by more than once but it was quite an evening and not an antler in the bunch. They filtered in from 4 different trails. Still have a fawn with spots while its' twin had lost all spots.
The wind was wrong this afternoon for this stand, the deer were a bit nervous and didn't graze very much. Only 3 deer stopped at the feeder.
Rut is still maybe a month away, the peak is way out in January.
Maybe ol' big boy will show up before the season's over.

That's quite a parade to witness, Phil !
We have had an unusual number of sightings right in our yard this year, often within yards of the house.
It would seem our white and red oak acorns are worth the chance. I'm sure we keep seeing the same 6 or 7 deer,
but never this close or this often!
One evening the wife caught two on the carport eating the cat's food off the ledge beside the back door !!!

Philip, that’s cool that the grandkids are hunting and that you are part of that ! Hope you get the Deer you are after .
Chris, never seen a deer eat cat food . They’re fun to watch when around the house .
Decided to go out gun hunting this year. Needed some more venison for the freezer so dropped this young Buck . 2024 deer season is over here in Wi. tomorrow night.
Good hunting out there all you folks that are getting after it!

JP, that one is a "whopper-jack" by most Florida standards!
Our grands live in Georgia and started going to the stand with me when they were little fellers. 1st time, both together was a real mess. It got better when it was just one at a time.
One Thanksgiving evening, we had seen a bunch of does and I was glad a buck hadn't turned up. As I was gathering up our junk and getting ready to go, grandson Christian was still watching with his binoculars said, "There's a buck Granddaddy, shoot him!" Good to remember but not exactly what I wanted to do with a house full of family.
We love that they want to be out and get their hands dirty. Worked with the youngest, introducing him to an old single shot 22, he's 8. His dad had already killed a buck when he was his age. When you don't grow up in the country, IMHO, you miss a lot! Glad we can at least try to keep them close to what their parents did as children.

Thank you, JP.
Getting up in years causes me to remember the old timers and their tales years ago. Maybe we can tell some tales along the way for others to hear and wonder about.
I learned as a preteen that when my old uncle told a story and it began with, "I knew a feller that....", most of the time he was actually the one the story was about, generally something shady. When it was a upright story, he would start by saying, "I or we used to do such and such".
Always love hearing/reading hunting and fishing tales.
Grandpa used to say, "If a tale is worth telling, it is worth telling right, maybe embellishing it a bit."
I would encourage folks to share their outdoor activities with pictures and stories.

I got out to enjoy the weather and came across a couple of does bedded down. I managed a qick pic of 1 before they jumped and ran.

That's a great picture of the doe in the snow.

Our field had a several does and yearlings in it yesterday afternoon. It is also doe weekend, haven't decided to bust one yet. Another doe weekend at the end of the month will take place. If we hunted north of I-10, does are legal any day throughout the season.
This is what we were seeing yesterday afternoon:

Does, fawns and yearlings with one little spike still following his momma.

Maybe one of the bucks we've got on camera will come out this afternoon.
Next Saturday a 7 day M/L season will kick in, I'll probably change stands for that week. Then the season goes back to rifle season through most February.

Adding to my earlier post this afternoon, I want to say on both Friday and Saturday when I went to the woods, a very light colored doe kept the other deer on edge by her nervousness. She would walk around with her nose in the air, stomping her front feet, trying to get something to respond to her challenges. She would blow and every deer would be on guard. I've always heard it said, "Y'all need to kill the old doe thats in charge! She'll keep the bucks from coming into a green field." We'll this afternoon I did just that.
I was settling down in the shooting house at 3:30. Before I got completely settled I noticed a deer coming out of the woods. When I got to looking, there was another deer already in the field. They fed together for a few minutes when all of a sudden one doe raised her head and began testing the wind. She promptly started towards the shooting house, stomping and finally blowing. I realized it was the same old light colored gal from the last two evenings. She is now hanging in the oak tree.
I might add, the wind has been wrong all 4 days of this "token" season and I am a strong believer in scent control, Dead Down Wind the brand we're using now.
So starts the 2024-25 deer season.

Several years ago I would faithfully shoot my hunting rifles year around and would have confidence that my 'scope was still on target. In the distant past I had used Remington 700 30-06 for maybe 15 years without having to make any 'scope adjustments. The scope an old Redfield 2X7 with a Redfield Jr. Base and rings, carried on a horse, carried on Jeeps, trucks and even airboat, dropped and beat around like a tool. All that to say, I still have success with 2 different different Remingtons both with Redfield optics but I still feel obligated to be sure before the seasons starts. Finally did that early last week.
Today, the day before a week of M/L hunting, we shot and were satisfied with our old school 50 cal. Knight rifle. It too, has an old Redfield variable 'scope mounted on it but with Weaver rings and bases. Surprisingly it shot vary well.
A couple of pictures after clean up this evening. You fellers that mess with M/Ls know about the row of patches.

These old Knights were once upon a time a high dollar item, used ones are now dirt cheap. It'll still cause a "dirt nap" as the young hunters say.

A Trio of Bobcats! That’s interesting. Have been hearing of more sightings all thru out the upper Midwest. We never heard or seen any growing up. Now every week or more we see one . Never seen a trio though Ike. Thanks for sharing that

That's a good looking Knight Treefarmer! A friend loaned me his Knight several years ago before I bought my own MZ. I really liked the feel of it, and it shot very well. Tried to buy it, but he would not part. I have a CV Optima currently. It doesn't have that old school feel, but shoots very well. I like shooting a MZ, even with the mess. I learned of a cleaning mixture of peroxide, alcohol, Dawn soap, Murphy's, and hot water that works great. Thanks for posting ... had almost forgot about my friend's Knight.
