Goins

Post by Panzer2085 »

Is there anywhere to purchase a digital copy of Goins Encyclopedia or a place to download it? Considering you can’t find them really anywhere especially for a reasonable price I’m trying anyway to find one so I can better educate myself. Thanks

The 1998 copyright likely stands in the way of the existence of a digital copy.

Having Goins even at a premium will be worth it.

I think that if you hang in there, you will score one at an acceptable price. Meanwhile, be aware that the 1998 edition is the one you want. There is an earlier one out there that is not as good. And in any case, any book like that is full of incompletes and inaccuracies. It is still the best out there.

Goins did 4 books starting in 1979. The last one, the 1998, is definitely the best to have.

The editions have more info as they progress and the last one also includes more info on razors and fixed blades. It's definitely worth the cost, but finding them is tough because they're so useful and limited. I actually just sold one, but at $125 it was at the price point that you're trying to avoid. If you just want info on tang stamps for folders you can look for an older version. It'd be about half the cost.

That's my Etsy store where I sell old knives and sometimes handmade knife accessories to support my knife habbit. Thanks for looking my friend. ::tu::

Paid subscribers to Knife Magazine can view Goins Encyclopedia on the magazine’s web site. (Along with all of the magazine’s back issues). https://www.knifemagazine.com/ They acquired all the undistributed stock of the last Goins’ edition from the publishers, and offered them on their website for $17.95 plus shipping per copy. They were available for several years but they finally sold out. Good luck finding one for less than $100 now.

An amazing collection of information especially considering they compiled it before Al Gore invented the internet! ::sotb::

Thanks everyone I appreciate it. I’ll just have to bite the bullet one day and pick one up. How do paid KnifeMagazine subscribers get to view the book? Is it a link, pdf etc?

Sometimes members here have extra copies of Goins they want
to sell. It has been awhile, but I assume eBay would have some
also.

There is a keyword search capability. Depending on your browser it’s either on the homepage, or accessible from the drop-down menu. One way is just enter “Goins” into search and submit it which will bring up page 1. From there you can read it page by page. Another method is enter a knife company name which takes you directly to that page with that company’s info.
