Hi!
I joined this page to get help with the restoration of a farrier knife I have acquired. I have wanted a simple pocket knife with hoof pick. This will be vastly more useful.
Very stiff but blades seem in overall good shape despite some minor rust in grooves. A bit of tarnish and dirt in interior.
Exterior nicked up a little, also dirty, and metal tarnished.
Any ideas on history of this knife or ideas on how to best start restoration.
Thank you,
Michelle

Re: Information about cool farrier knife
Many, many, many threads and topics about cleaning here, just look around.
Knife looks to be in good condition, not a candidate for "restoration" per se, especially if you intend to actually use it.
Start with a basic cleaning to get any junk out of the blade wells. Toothbrush, toothpicks and such that fit in the tight spaces. Warm water and Dawn will help and compressed air to dry afterwards. Also clean the back of each blade where it meets the spring when fully open. Almost any metal polish will suffice to shine up the bolsters if you want to. A regular pencil (the 'lead' end) will remove any active rust on the blades.
After that, oil the joints. You will find as many opinions for the best oil as there are products to use !

Does the knife have any markings? Clear closeups of the tangstamps, if any are there would be helpful.
