OC, That is a good reminder about the issue of ricochets. Even seniors can get careless.

OLDE CUTLER wrote: Sun Oct 13, 2024 4:48 pm Had the darndest thing happen Friday. My brother from out of state was visiting for a few days, so we headed out to the local gunclub to shoot a few. We shot some 100 yard rifle and then went over to the pistol range. I was shooting my S & W 638 Airweight, 38 Special with a handload I make with 125 grain Berrys plated flat nose bullets and a small dose of 700X powder. I touched one off at some rubber hanging gongs that our club just recently installed from about 10 yards and all of a sudden I feel something hit me in the chest just to the left of the right hand pocket of the short sleeve shirt I was wearing. It was not painful, but sure did startle me. I looked down and right between my shoes lay the bullet I had just fired, which I have shown in the picture (note rifling marks). I think what happened was I fired at the rubber gong which was hanging by a screw into a horizontal wood piece of the target frame, and my aim was a little high and the bullet hit the rubber where it was attached to the frame and that absorbed most of the energy, but spit the bullet right back at me. I was standing there with a 2 hand grip, the bullet returned back and went right under my hands and the grips of the 638 and hit me. Like I said, it was not painful, kind of like someone threw a bullet at you by hand. Really weird!!!!

Had that happen shooting .22cb one time. Shooting into a wood pile and one bounced back and hit my fil in the arm. Left quite a bruise.

I’ve never had the bullet hit me but plenty of 9mm brassi including a couple of hits on the safety glasses. One gun was really bad so I sold it. One of the reasons I prefer revolvers.

I worked at an indoor range after I retired and we had a strict no low cut top rule for both men and women. Inevitably someone would take their flannel or sweatshirt off while shooting and hot brass would fall between skin and garment. The range officers caught most violations but it happened at least weekly.

Eyewear is on 100% of the time I’m on a range whether I’m shooting or not. Earwear is on almost 100%. Blowbacks are quite common with rubber backstops; not a day went by where shrapnel didn’t return to the shooting stalls

If you ever shoot steel plates be very careful. Absolutely Closest distance for handguns 10 yards but I do 15, and slant target downward 20 degrees

Sometimes cast bullets fragment when hitting metal and pieces fly around. I've shot hundreds of steel plates and knockdowns while shooting SASS Cowboy shoots. Personal protection gear is a must.

I was back out at the gunclub yesterday and I noticed that all the rubber gongs have been taken down and are nowhere to be seen. Could have been problems for others besides me.

I was out squirrel hunting and found a beer bottle which I placed on top of a bolder. After moving back about 50-60 paces I fired my single shot 22 at the bottle and missed, but I was almost immediately struck in the chest by the returning bullet. I kept the bullet for several years as a reminder not to shoot at rocks.

I was the kid who shot a penny with a pellet rifle and the ricochet hit me on my lower eyelid. 1/2 an inch higher I’d be wearing an eye patch.

Stupid kid.

A good friend on mine was at the range in the Marines. The guy standing next to him caught a ricochet from a .50 cal in the chest. Knocked him flat on his back and took the wind out of him.

While not exactly the same as these recent encounters, I pulled a dumb one years ago ...

A friend and I were out target shooting under the power lines one day. He had recently modified a 10-22 and was testing it out. He handed it to me to try a few shots. I propped up on the driver side bed of his truck, shooting across the bed.
At the time I had no experience with a scope on a rifle, and did not see the roll bar in my sight picture.
Caught the edge of said roll bar and a fragment of the bullet cut my friend's cheek!
Some years later, I bought that rifle from him, and still have it, though with a different scope.

10/22s are awesome, and 10/22 day is coming up soon! 😉

At about 10 years old, I was in the basement with some friends shooting a Daisy pump BB gun at a little plastic monkey sitting on the edge of our shoe-shine box. Shooting from the prone position I hit low and caught the edge of the box. The BB ricocheted and hit me right in the front teeth. Didn't break them but it sure rattled my skull for a couple minutes and hurt for hours. As my dear Mother would have said,"You could've

Thanks, dog. I put an ATI folding stock on it. With a bipod, it shoots like a Ruger Charger. 😉

Here’s my 10-22. Haven’t shot it for ages.
I remember it was picky about ammo But it has the cool factor

I prefer my Browning BL-22

I shoot a lot during good weather at a local outdoor gun club. There are a lot of people who shoot there that do not reload (how can they afford that?), thus I pick up a lot of brass that may be things that I do not have in my cartridge collection, a caliber that I shoot and reload, or is just brass that goes into the scrap bucket. Anyway I picked up some assorted stuff today and among them was this 9mm fired case and once I looked at it carefully, my jaw was bruised when it hit the floor. I can just see it now, 2 guys go to the range when one of them has a new handload to try. His load is a 9mm, 147gr bullet, 10 grains of Super Duper powder, and it makes 9000 fps! Check out that bulge ring, pierced primer, and the headstamp is almost obliterated. The gun evidently was able to extract the case as there was a heavily bent rim on the case.

This seems like an active thread with some really nice guns posted here so I thought I would add a bit. Here is my M40a1 clone. Spent years collecting the right parts
after getting a return stock from McMillan and the rest including an old 22-250 in the correct serial number range, a Unertl from the CMP, and reproduction Weaver base and rings. Final assembly by a retired 2112.

I built this single shot target rifle a few years ago. It's based on a Parker-Hale M85 receiver. I chose to chamber it in 30-06 Springfield.
