Not sure I've noticed this on a knife before

I picked up this nice old Ulster at a recent show. I didn't look at it that closely until last night. Knives like this with one spring usually use a catchbit on the small opposite blade, but I found this one interesting in that instead of a catchbit, the small blade has a thick tang that is acting as a spacer/catchbit.

However, maybe this is common, and I am just not paying attention.

Interesting. I’ve seen many single spring two-blade knives but usually the secondary is short enough to fold in beside the master without any spacers. You can see the typical offset on the master on this one, but it has a longer secondary that when closed extends past the offset. Don’t recall seeing one with that construction. I saves the cost of one piece part (eliminate the catch bit) and simplifies construction.

I have only seen one similar thing: A Gamble Stores knife (made by Camillus) cattle knife had an extra tang that was spot-welded to the punch blade.
I did not know that it was two pieces welded together until I tried to replace that broken punch!

I like how Whittlers have a thick main blade that covers both secondary springs.
