Vintage Mother Of Pearl (MOP) Knives

describe that knife, it or they would be a gross understatement.

Not too recently, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT buy the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, it turned out to be a keeper and it did get added to my general, "foreign born" pocket knife accumulation. It is a SOLINGEN, two blades, one tang stamp, 3 5/8" closed, mother of pearl handles or scales, tipped bolsters, one spring, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "SOLINGEN" with a logo above it. The main handle side (written) says, "Karlsbad" (EUROPE). The other handle side says, "15/1 1912" (January 15, 1912). This location and date was special to someone. The one handle side scale has a piece missing. The secondary blade is out of alignment with the spring. The main blade does have a SOFT half stop. The main blade does have an OK opening snap. The main blade does have an OK closing snap. The secondary blade does NOT have a half stop. The secondary blade does NOT have an opening snap. The secondary blade does NOT have a closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is still in GOOD condition. It did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

It is a W. H. MORLEY & SONS, two blades, four tang stamps, 2 1/2" closed, a long main blade pull, one spring, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "W. H. (over) MORLEY (over) & SONS (over) NEW YORK" The main blade back tang stamp has the "clover" logo. The secondary blade front tang stamp says, "W. H. (over) MORLEY (over) & SONS (over) GERMANY" The secondary blade back tang stamp also has the "clover" logo. This main blade does have a GOOD half stop. This main blade does have a GOOD opening snap. This main blade does have a GOOD closing snap. This secondary blade does have a GOOD half stop. This secondary blade does have a GOOD opening snap. This secondary blade does have a GOOD closing snap. The mother of pearl handles or scales are just GORGEOUS. This pocket knife is in EXCELLENT condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

A couple out of my dad’s collection.
A Remington Dr knife that you can still see the etching. There is a crack in the handle on one side. Did not take a bunch of pictures of this one but you can see both the etching and the crack.

And a very nice and I think very early Hammer Brand Tuxedo that I can’t see any cracks in.
I’m am pretty sure there are more I have not looked.

I gladly added this pocket knife to my general, mother of pearl, "foreign born" pocket knife accumulation. It is a KORTEN, two blades, two tang stamps, 2 5/8" closed, a long main blade pull, a long secondary blade pull, a swelled center, one spring, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "KORTEN (over) GERMANY" The secondary blade front tang stamp also says, "KORTEN (over) GERMANY" The main blade does have a GOOD half stop. The main blade does have an OK opening snap. The main blade does have a GOOD closing snap. The secondary blade does have a GOOD half stop. The secondary blade does have a GOOD opening snap. The secondary blade does have a GOOD closing snap. I couldn't quite capture the mother of pearl colors. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

It looks like "KORTEN" was the brand name used by KORTEN & SCHERF in 1900.

I've always loved these pearl handled knives! Here are a few old ones First is a Tested era Case 8360sc which I believe is pretty rare then a few from Empire Circa 1859-1929 and finally one by Northfield.

I think I showed this first old Tuna Valley knife 5+ years ago in this thread. But I'll show it again because it is a cool old example of MOP with a fascinating backstory. The 2nd knife shown is another old original 1906 Tuna Valley. And the 3rd knife is an old Humason & Beckley equal end from around 1890-1910 range.

Regarding the Tuna's, these were the first knives ever made bearing the Tuna Valley name. During the Platts and Case merger around 1905, they needed knife inventory to keep money rolling in while the new factory was being built. Case had knives imported from Germany under various brand names. One of the names they created was "Tuna Valley Cutlery", because Bradford, PA is along the Tunungwant River. Locals call it "Tuna" for short, so the whole area is known as the Tuna Valley.

I have found 2 of these old original German made Case knives with the Tuna Valley name. At knife shows I found a dealer who had another 3 varieties displayed. All are small pearl handled ladies knives. Estimates say that less than 600 total knives were imported in 1905, and sold through Case in 1906. The Tuna Valley name was never used again by Case, and was resurrected into the modern Tuna Valley knife brand starting in 2008.

That's a NICE one Lyle! Sort of surprised it only has the one bolster, though it is a pearl. I think the single bolster actually adds to the looks of the knife. Is this one 4 inches in length when closed and when was it made? Thanks.
