Lighters are obviously easier, especially windproof varieties. But fire starters are definitely cooler. Flints are old fashioned, ferro rods actually already have magnesium in them, they used to commonly come together but separate, a rod and a chunk of magnesium.
So that's convenient. Modern ferros throw tons of sparks, and are easy to use, if you've got proper tinder and kindling. You can have a fire going in seconds. But it'll never honestly be as easy or convenient as a lighter. Fire starter sets are inherently water proof, though, which is their primary advantage over a lighter.

You can buy ferro rods that are cut down to about 3/4 inch long with two holes drilled throught it. They can be put on a key chain, on your shoe laces, bag strap or purse. This way you can always have a backup nearby. As far as a striker goes, carbon steel is probably the best, but anything with an edge will work. I've seen people use glass and even hardwoods.

Why can't you leave a link? Who's going to ban you with high probanility? Sounds a little bit paranoid. People leave links here all the time. Never heard or seen anyone get banned for it.

In general, I just bought a knife with a ferro rod this is a collaboration with DBK. It's easier and cheaper.

They're not gonna ban you around here. And if you would use a handle, like most of us, they won't know your name or be able to ban you even in the slim chance those people who might ban you get over here and happen to read your posts with the link. If there is a will, there is a way. Keeps the Gestapo and the lame banners off your back. God bless the links that get through the cracks.
