Gtrclktr-351 wrote: Wed Jun 26, 2024 4:08 am Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you
Or the kindness you've shown.

Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.

Tell me Lord, if you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from you
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you.

Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so
Help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I've need you so
Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.

Sorry to post the whole song, but it all is so personal to me, but that‘s an even longer story.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

Verse 4 “Amazing Grace” John Newton 1779

Unfortunately, this verse is often omitted in many hymnals/songbooks. It is usually replaced with verse 7, added in 1829 author unknown
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Love Gordon Lightfoot - one of his most personal songs about the breakup of his first marriage:

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost, you can't see

And now that Bittergreen is gone, the hills have gone to rust
There comes a weary stranger, his tears fall in the dust
Kneeling in the churchyard, in the Autumn mist
He's dreaming of her kiss

You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

You can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
You can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
You can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All you gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down, do it, do it, do it.

Mr. Lightfoot was a treasure. He used his personal life to forge more than one fine tune.
I can see her looking fast in her faded jeans
She's a hard-loving woman, got me feeling mean
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feeling better, when I'm feeling no pain
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs(penned about his tumultuous relationship with Cathy Smith)

Re: Great song lyrics

Post by Gtrclktr-351 »

I apologize, in advance, for the length of this post. There are two songs, actually quite a bit more than two, that resonated in my younger days and, unfortunately, still resonate today.
Eve of Destruction: Barry McGuire

The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'
But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm trying to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you, boy
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return, it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace
And you tell me
Over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
No no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

For What It's Worth: Buffalo Springfield

There's something happening here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?

What a field day for the heat (Ooh ooh ooh)
A thousand people in the street (Ooh ooh ooh)
Singing songs and they carrying signs (Ooh ooh ooh)
Mostly say, "Hooray for our side" (Ooh ooh ooh)
It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away
We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Now, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
You better stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

No apologies this time. This song, from 1967(wasn't that the "Summer of Love"?), carries a message that may just be more relevant now than it was 57 years ago.
Get Together
Song by
The Youngbloods

Love is but a song we sing
Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Some may come and some may go
He will surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

If you hear the song I sing
You will understand, listen
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

I said, come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right now
I make no promises. There may be more 60s lyrics posted.

I walked down to the river
Stood on the shore
Seems like the devil's always tryin'
To get in my door

Just when I thought I
Couldn't take it anymore
Here he came again
My friend

He keeps sending me angels
From up on high
He keeps sending me angels
To teach me to fly

He keeps sending me angels
Sweet and true
He keeps sending me angels
Just like you

As I stand on this mountain
Face to the wind
Amazed by the number of times
I have sinned

And the countless enemies
That should have been friends
Oh here he comes again
My friend

He keeps sending me angels
Here they come a-flyin'
He keeps sending me angels
To keep me from cryin'

He keeps sending me angels
Sweet and true
He keeps sending me angels
Just like you

Some say that it's comin'
I say it's already here
The love that's among us
Through the joy and the fear

When I look in your eyes
Everything is so clear
My friend
Here he comes again

He keeps sending me angels
From up on high
He keeps sending me angels
To teach me to fly

He keeps sending me angels
Sweet and true
He keeps sending me angels
Just like you

Kinda stickin' with the "poker game" theme...

Me and My Uncle: Grateful Dead

Me and my uncle went riding down
South Colorado, West Texas bound
We stopped over in Santa Fe
That being the point just about halfway
And you know it was the hottest part of the day

I took the horses up to the stall
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt
It being summer, I took off my shirt
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt

West Texas cowboys, they's all around
With liquor and money, they're loaded down
So soon after pay day, you know it seemed a shame
You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game
Hi-lo jacks and the winner take the hand

My uncle starts winning, cowboys got sore
One of them called him, and then two more
Accused him of cheating, well no it couldn't be
I know my uncle, he's as honest as me
And I'm as honest as a Denver man can be

One of them cowboys, he starts to draw
Well I shot him down, Lord, he never saw
Shot me another, hot damn he won't grow old
In the confusion my uncle grabbed the gold
And we high-tailed it down to Mexico

Now I love those cowboys, I love their gold
I love my uncle, God rest his soul
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Pretty sure John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wrote "Me And My Uncle" Judy Collins recorded it in the 60's. My band has been doing it Bluegrass style for 50 years. Fun song to play.

You are correct, but Grateful Dead was my introduction to the tune.

I’ve never heard that version, but I’ll be looking it up.

It is, indeed, a fun song to play, but I haven’t yet mastered the tune.

The Pilgrim, Chapter 33 Kris Kristofferson(another one I attempt to play)

See him wasted on the sidewalk
In his jacket and his jeans
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money love and dreams
Which he spent like they was goin' out of style

And he keeps right on a changin'
For the better or the worse
Searchin' for a shrine he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet and he's a picker
He's a prophet and he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher
And a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction
Partly truth and partly fiction
Takin' every wrong direction
On his lonely way back home

He has tasted good and evil
In your bedrooms and your bars
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from his devils, Lord
And reachin' for the stars
And losin' all he loved along the way

But if this world keeps right on turnin'
For the better or the worse
And all he ever gets is older and around
From the rockin' of the cradle
To the rollin' of the hearse
The goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet and he's a picker
He's a prophet and he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher
And a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction
Partly truth and partly fiction
Takin' every wrong direction
On his lonely way back home

There's lotta wrong directions
On that lonely way back home
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Great thread, I love reading these and remembering all the songs I had forgotten. Lot's of great musicians out there. Three of my favourites are John Prine, Leonard Cohen and Kris Kristoferson.

When John Prine was asked to sing at his ex wife's wedding he wrote a song for her called All the Best including the lyrics

I wish you don't do like I do
And never fall in love with someone like you

I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side

Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me
'Bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Try to hide my sorrow from the people I meet
And get along with it all

Go down where the people say y'all
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
And start talkin' again when I know what to say

From “Clay Pigeons” by Blaze Foley

Blaze was a great songwriter, part of the Austin, Texas music scene. (The Lucinda Williams song “Drunken Angel” is about Blaze Foley.). The great John Prine covered “Clay Pigeons” and if you didn’t know better you’d think he wrote it. Once when John Prine sang it in concert he remarked about wishing he’d known Blaze Foley. Someone in the audience pointed out that he had performed with Blaze in Austin. To which he replied something to the effect that there were a lot of things that he couldn’t remember from when he was in Austin.
