During the height of the political wars in Central America a jeweler named Bob Terzuola made some knives for military, police and contractors. His blades quickly gained fame and popularity. Many consider his work the first true tactical knives.

Following is a Terzuola/ Camillus collaboration. This is Terzuola's CQB-1, Close Quarters Battle 1. The 5 1/2" blade is made of ATS34, wih a Micarta handle. I wonder how many of us remember when ATS34 was all the rage as a premium steel.


It is a well constructed knife. The blade's lines are not as crisp as I would like. On the other hand the blade came with an exceptionally sharp edge.

Thanks Iman! The BPS is a solid knife . Fit and finish is a touch rough but it's a bush-craft and not made to be pretty. The blade steel is performing well, takes a good edge and has held it well. I've only put to light use so far and no complaints yet. Comes with an excellent sheath. Below is the latest addition to my bush-craft corner from OKC, a bush-craft field knife. Very similar to the BPS but this one is made in the USA and has a more Kephart style blade. Fit and finish is smoother and the blade is 440HC. A little pricier than the BPS. Unfortunately this one comes with a sheath I don't like at all, I'll probably replace it with a leather one.

That's definitely prettier, and great lines. You made me wonder on the price point too, but I would guess it's gotta be double or triple the BPS price. I was just looking for knives to give to two teenage nephews who have already killed several deer, each got a bear, many birds etc. They have tiny little fixed blades that definitely work, but wanted to give them a man's knife for hunting, camping etc. Thanks for the info. The BPS with a good sheath has gotta be hard to beat price wise. Thanks again

One thing I forgot to mention about the OKC, the handle is about 1/2 inch longer than the BPS handle which can be a selling point depending on the size of your hands. I have large hands and both knives are comfortable to grip. The OKC is priced in the $70.00 range. Your nephews would do well with either knife, both would work well as camp/hunting knives in my opinion though the price and the leather sheath of the BPS is more attractive.

It all depends on how you define the word "tactical". Generally speaking most people I know would say for combat/survival use. Which, of course, could mean any knife used for those purposes. Stab your enemy, cut fire wood, defend against large predators, peel potatoes, skin game, cut food, shave(optional), etc.... For instance, a butter knife would not be considered tactical but could be modified to become a tactical tool. In more modern times "tactical" has become more associated with military combat/survival in particular. But what do I know? I have a tactical baseball bat...it became tactical when I wrapped 12 feet of barbed wire around the head of it and painted it OD green. A tool/weapon carefully designed to use during and in support of a specific tactic. In the case of my baseball bat the tactic is CLOBBERIN' TIME. Have I gotten a chuckle out of you yet? It's like the term "assault weapon". Just about every weapon ever invented was invented to assault something or someone so the debate could go on forever.

When it was cutting edge technology (pun intended) I think you could have called it tactical. In the present it's a work of art, albeit a work of art that will still cut and pierce.
